The following information has been provided by Microsoft and describes Visio
features that have been added to or improved in Microsoft Visio 2002.
Throughout, Visio 2002 is referred to as Visio 10, Microsoft's internal name for
the new release.
Now includes Visio Technical
Visio 10 Professional includes all the solutions previously
available in Visio 2000 Technical Edition as well as those found in Visio 10
Standard and Visio 2000 Professional Edition.
IT diagramming
Exchange 2000 topology diagramming
.
IT professionals can define and communicate Exchange 2000 deployment plans using
new shapes that represent Exchange topologies.
Improved Web site mapping
. The
Visio 10 web site mapping solution provides increased control over discovery and
layout. The new List window enables easy navigation by displaying Web site
elements in a tree view.
Web site reports
. Users can now
generate a complete report of all the links in a Web site, including broken
links. The reporting tool can even identify changes in a Web site since it was
last diagrammed.
Visio Network Tools
. Visio Network
Tools is an add-on that provides advanced network documentation solutions for
Visio 10 Professional customers and includes a one-year subscription to the
Visio Network Center, providing the latest Visio network tools, up-to-date
equipment shapes, and network documentation information and services.
Building plans
The Visio 10 building plan solutions increase user efficiency and provide
custom features for incorporating data into diagrams.
Simplified interface.
Shapes
manipulated only through dialog boxes in Visio 2000 can now be updated through
direct resizing or positioning, or by specifying properties in the Custom
Properties Window.
Curved walls.
Visio 10 Professional
provides shapes that represent curved walls and also allows any flat wall to be
transformed into a curved wall. Users can easily change the curvature of curved
wall shapes.
Improved wall intersection cleanup
.
Visio 10 automatically cleans up wall intersections, reducing the amount of
cleanup required in creating building plans.
Floor plan data population.
Users
can automatically populate floor plans with data stored in Active Directory,
Exchange, Excel spreadsheets, Access databases, or other ODBC-compliant data
sources.
Color by value.
Visio 10 enables
users to automatically assign colors to shapes, such as offices in a floor plan,
based on custom property values.
Process engineering
Visio 10 Professional simplifies the way users work with process engineering
component information, as well as providing options for more flexible component
tagging.
No external database.
The process
engineering solution now displays process engineering component information in
the Custom Properties window, eliminating the need for an external database.
More flexible tagging.
Visio 10
enables engineers to manually tag process engineering components and selectively
retag them, while retaining the option to automatically assign component tags.
Users can also generate tags based on component custom property data.
Developer solutions
The Visio 10 developer solutions feature greater
interoperability with and support for Microsoft developer tools. In addition,
Visio 10 provides productivity enhancements for creating database and software
diagrams.
Interface productivity.
With
Visio 10, users can add new fields consecutively to database tables or
software classes, enabling more rapid data entry. Resizable dialog boxes
provide visibility to as much or as little information as desired, while
dockable windows (Output, Code, Database Properties, Tables) free work space
and provide unobstructed access to the model.
Database modeling.
In addition to
full list of DBMSs, Visio 10 supports SQL Server 2000. Users can automatically
generate a complete database diagram from the Reverse Engineer Wizard in Visio
10, eliminating the need to drag tables from the Tables window. Also, building
a database diagram from the Tables window is faster in Visio 10 than in Visio
2000.
Software modeling.
Visio 10
supports all Visual Studio 6 languages, and will support all Visual Studio.net
Visual Basic, Visual C++, and C# when these tools are released.
