The following information has been provided by Microsoft and describes Visio
features that have been added to or improved in Microsoft Visio 2002.
Throughout, Visio 2002 is referred to as Visio 10, Microsoft's internal name for
the new release.
New Visio offering for IT professionals
Visio Network Tools is an add-on that provides advanced
network documentation solutions for Visio 10 Professional customers and
provides online access to additional tools and information.
Includes Visio 2000 Enterprise Edition IT tools
.
The Visio Network Tools add-on delivers the same IT tools formerly found in
Visio 2000 Enterprise Edition, including updated AutoDiscovery and Layout,
automated directory services documentation, Visio Network Equipment (VNE)
shape library, and network reporting solutions.
Online IT documentation tools, information, and services
.
Visio Network Tools includes a one-year renewable subscription to the Visio
Network Center, providing the latest tools, up-to-date equipment shapes, and
network documentation information and services.
AutoDiscovery and Layout
Solution
Updates to the AutoDiscovery and Layout solution include a streamlined
interface, WMI discovery of additional workstation and server device
information, and improved flexibility in storage of discovered network
information.
Streamlined interface
: Common
operations, such as connecting and annotating devices and mapping shapes, are
now more intuitive and easier to use, thanks to improvements to several of the
dialog boxes used in the AutoDiscovery and Layout solution.
WMI discovery
: Property
information available through the Windows Machine Interface (WMI) such as
installed drives and shared resources is now added to workstation and server
devices documented with the AutoDiscovery and Layout solution.
Single discovery database
:
Information gathered by the Layer 2 discovery process is now integrated into
the MSDE database.
Central SQL Server database
:
Users now have of the choice of documenting discovered network information in
a local MSDE database or a central SQL Server database that multiple users can
draw from a shared discovery database.
Directory Services Solutions
The directory services solutions include more scalable documentation for all
directory services, plus support for Exchange 2000, configuration container
support, and improved LDIF export for the Active Directory solution.
Properties on demand
: Large
directories can be imported more quickly and documented with in diagrams of
smaller file size thanks to an optional delay in property import.
Exchange 2000 shapes
: The Active
Directory solution now supports Exchange 2000 through by importing objects and
attributes to the Active Directory schema and representing them with
corresponding Exchange 2000 shapes.
Configuration container support
:
Users of the Active Directory solution can now view the contents of the
Configuration container, including sites, subnets, and more, through a new tab
on the Browse Directory dialog.
Improved LDIF export
: Drawings
created by dragging and dropping shapes from the stencils can be seamlessly
exported to LDIF format using the Export Changes function, then imported into
Active Directory with the new LDIFDE utility.
Visio Network Equipment shape library
The Visio Network Center features online delivery of new Visio Network
Equipment (VNE) shapes and more intuitive shape search through a new Find
Shape feature.
Find Shape feature
: The new Find
Shape feature enables users to search for and download manufacturer-specific
network equipment shapes both on their local machine and on the Web from one
simple interface. The Find Shape feature replaces the Locate Network Equipment
solution previously provided with Visio Network Equipment.
Online shape delivery
: New Visio
Network Equipment shapes are delivered in real time in cooperation with
equipment manufacturers, and are available to current Network Solutions
subscribers through the Find Shape feature within Visio 10 Professional or
from the Visio Network Center.
