Title Blocks in Visio

A title block is an essential part of any technical drawing. It contains all the necessary information required to identify and authorize a drawing.

The kind of information contained within the title block varies with the requirements drawing,   and of the people who will be using the drawing. The range of information in that a title block might include:

• Title
• Description
• Drawing reference number
• Part Number
• Client logo
• Drawing date
• Issue Date
• Authorization date
• Scale
• Drafter's Initials
• Checker's Initials
• Authorizer's Initials
• Revision History
• Materials specifications
• Standard notes
• ...and more

By convention the title block is located in the lower right-hand corner of the drawing, however depending on the sheet size, drawing layout and how the drawings will be stored and used, it could legitimately be located elsewhere. As with all technical documentation, the key to successful communication is consistency.

Title blocks are often located along the bottom edge or down the entire right-hand side of the drawing sheet.

Title blocks are part of technical drawing content that is often defined in national engineering standards. Check out the standards that apply to your part of the world.

The quickest way to add title block to your drawing in Visio Technical is to use shapes from the General - Title Blocks stencil. This stencil contains:

• Borders
• Pre-built title blocks to suit various page sizes
• Ruled columns
• Standard symbols
• Title block component shapes that allow you to build your own title blocks

To open the General - Title Block stencil select Files > Stencils > Annotation > General - Title Blocks.

To use a shape from the stencil, just drag it onto your drawing and position it. Double click on pre-built title blocks to open them for editing. A new drawing windows will open for you to edit the title block in. Just close it when you are done. Title block components extract information from the drawing to update themselves. Use them to create title blocks that automatically fill in.

Click and drag title block from the General - Title Blocks stencil

Place title blocks together with page borders and standard symbols on a background page in you drawing. Then apply this background to the pages in your document that require this standard of presentation.

Using background pages in this way does not change the scale of the title block if you change the scale of the drawing.
