VectorWorks User Dirtworks, PC, Wins SCUP and AIA CAE 2007 Excellence in Landscape Architecture Honor AwardColumbia, MD (June 25, 2007) - Dirtworks, PC, was awarded the 2007 Honor Award for Excellence in Landscape Architecture from the Society for College and University Planning (SCUP) and the AIA-Committee on Architecture for Education for the Courtyard and Outdoor Learning Environment for Natural Sciences at Keene State College. The Keene State College Science Center Courtyard, the heart of the new Science Center, demonstrates the successful contribution landscape architecture can make - in teaching and learning, promoting social connectedness, supporting community, and providing natural habitats. Enclosed on four sides by a dynamic, three-story brick and glass building, the courtyard is aesthetically pleasing, functional, and responsive to the college's commitment to service learning. Nature is more accessible, more exciting, and real to both students and community members as they enjoy the serendipity of discovery in this intellectually-engaging, sensory-rich garden. It is a place for education, relaxation, and reflection and where kids find science "cool." According David Kamp, ASLA fellow elect, LF, president of Dirtworks and the project's lead landscape architect, the courtyard's design and documentation were particularly complex. Using VectorWorks helped make the project more manageable. Dirtworks was able to meet the college's deadline to have the courtyard complete within one school year and not interrupt the school's teaching schedule. "Representing the fluid forms of a landscape, the project's intricate details, and the complex coordination necessary between the other project team members can be challenging with CAD programs," says Adrian Smith, ASLA, project manager and former senior associate. "For example, the in-situ snow melt system required complex design and coordination between the engineers and architects. Since the tools in VectorWorks are so accessible, once the standards were established, drafting the detailed design became a straightforward exercise." Dirtworks uses VectorWorks extensively in most project phases, from concept development to construction administration. Several prominent projects using VectorWorks include Legacy Groves (a memorial to Flight 93), Center for Discovery, Earthplace Nature Center, and the University of Virginia Entry Court & Garden. The SCUP/AIA-CAE 2007 awards program is a juried competition that recognizes state-of-the art planning and emphasizes excellence in higher education environments and its resultant physical manifestations.
