DEARBORN, Mich., February 20, 2007 --The Society of Manufacturing Engineers (SME) announced today that General Motors will sponsor the fourth annual Bright Minds Mentor program. As part of the program 50 high school students will attend the Rapid Prototyping and Manufacturing Conference & Exposition at the Marriott Renaissance in Detroit on May 2, 2007. The Bright Minds Mentor program sponsored by General Motors was developed by SME's Rapid Technologies & Additive Manufacturing Community.

Students will team with industry-expert mentors and will learn about additive fabrication and other rapid development technologies by touring the exhibits, attending conference sessions, and interacting with presenters, exhibitors and meeting attendees

Bright Minds students will complete a survey and write an essay about their interests, and what they hope to achieve. Industry expert mentors are matched with the students' interests as closely as possible. Each mentor teams with two students and communicates regularly by e-mail to get to know one another before meeting at the show.

Each student receives a padfolio and personalized business cards provided by SME for networking assistance. Before leaving the program, students will complete surveys to communicate what they've learned and get their overall feedback on the program. Two copies of the conference proceedings will be provided on CD for each high school's library.

The Bright Minds leaders are Brett Lyons, University of Michigan; William Beaver, PE, York Technical College; Carl Dekker, Met-L-Flo, Inc.; Dalong Gao, General Motors; Timothy J. Gornet, University of Louisville; Douglas Mitchell, Ford Motor Company; Ken Patton, Saddleback College; Jeff Raquet, PhD, University of North Carolina; Patrick Spicer, General Motors; Steve Wendell, Sinclair Community College; and Terry Wohlers, Wohlers Associates, Inc.
