Practical Help Needed for WaterAid Australia Project in East Timor

Australian aid organization needs assistance to establish an engineering base in East Timor.

Melbourne, Australia - 18 August 2005 --- WaterAid Australia is an international aid organization based in Melbourne, Australia. It conducts aid programs in developing countries and is planning to send a water engineer to Timor-Leste in October 2005 for an initial 2-year posting.

The engineer will be involved in designing and implementing a range of water and sanitation projects in rural communities in Aileu District of East Timor. The main technologies will be gravity feed water systems and pour flush latrines. 

To achieve the maximum potential from placing a professional in the field, WaterAid need to provide an appropriate professional "tool kit". 

WaterAid Australia is seeking assistance from the engineering community to assist with whatever it can to help provide our dedicated professionals with the tools they need to help others.

If you are able to assist by donating any of the items listed below your contribution would be greatly appreciated. Used items surplus to your requirements but in good working order are very welcome.

East Timor WaterAid Project Equipment List

Surveying Equipment

  • Automatic level "SETL" or "Leica NA720"
  • Measuring staff - "MYZOX"
  • Hand level - Sokkia Magnifying Abney Level; 5x with stadia 1:100
  • Altimeter - (2 units) Silva Alba windwatch + 8 extra batteries
  • Measuring Wheel: Rotasure 1000ST, metric
  • Garmin GPS 12 with PC intepace cable and PC software
  • Hard case: Pelican 1300 Case protector (for Hand Level)
  • Measuring Tape (50m), metric and imperial 
  • Precision screw drivers (for calibrating the hand level and Auto level) - small head flat crew and Philips head screw driver
  • Hand compass
  • Magnifying lens 10x

Source and Well Evaluation Equipment

  • Stopwatch and 5-liter plastic bucket
  • Water level indicator (with metered cable which lights on when hit the water
  • V-notch 
  • Water testing kit: for pH, temp, Calcium hardness, iron, hardness, Mn, conductivity, NaCl, turbidity, Chlorine (Hack Testing Kit)

Computer and Software

  • Notebook computer (at least 20GB hard disc capacity, 1.2 GHz RAM-500MB), with charger and Ethernet cable 
  • ArcView for photomaps, aerial maps contours
  • MWSnap 3 for editing photographs to smaller capacity
  • MS Office (Word, Excel, Power Point, Access)
  • AutoCAD
  • CD creator:"Roxio"

Office Equipment

  • Digital camera
  • Video camera
  • Scanner
  • Printer: small like Canon BJC 85 with scanner 
  • Calculator - scientific
  • Drafting instruments- eg. Set squares, compass, pencils

Mechanical Tool Kit

  • Plastic tool box
  • Wrenches, pliers, cutters, sockets, screwdrivers, etc
  • Electric drill and a set of bits for steel, wood and concrete.
