Exton, Pa. July 21, 2005 Total, the fourth-largest publicly traded oil and gas company in the world, has won a 2005 BE Award for its Cartography Intranet Global Services project. The award category was Plant: Managed Environment.

The BE Awards of Excellence, which are selected by an independent jury of industry experts and presented at an evening ceremony during the annual BE Conference (www.be.org), honor the extraordinary work of Bentley users improving the worlds infrastructure. These projects set benchmarks for their industries, and showcase the imagination and technical mastery of the organizations that created them.

According to Total project manager Samuel Husy, the companys new ProjectWise managed environment is providing a number of benefits beyond the sharing of geological and geographical data. In oil and natural gas exploration and production operations, said Husy, Bentley ProjectWise not only replaces the old light table, it also speeds up information retrieval and avoids wasted time and common errors, such as confusion between revisions. At the same time, it provides our geoscientists and engineers with better maps and the comfort that comes from visualizations that ease their interpretations. In addition, it opens the door to our use of other enterprise tools.

The focus of Totals project was global access to its geographic, geological, and petrophysical data. Upstream in the exploration and production process, cartographers, topographers, and technicians work together to supply maps that provide all types of information including legal, satellite, seismic, geological, and topographic for the geologists, geophysicists, and petrophysicists. Gas well estimates, pipeline placements, and drilling surveys are examples of critical items that depend upon the correct reading of these maps.

Total needed to ensure the compatibility of this data across national borders, as well as to securely share map repositories. It accomplished this via a new intranet based on a ProjectWise managed environment. The intranet enables communication among the more than 30 Total subsidiaries around the world.

From the interface of this secure new system, it is possible to visualize at the scale of the earth and zoom in on a region with detailed maps that include crest lines and topological information: geologic layers, rivers, wells, exploration data, and so on. To date, 40,000 maps have been put into the system.

Functions of the system include queries, search, visualization, on-the-fly transformation, a common format for all subsidiaries, history management, and versioning.
