Grand Prize Winner Goes on a Cruise; Contest Showcases Stunning Digital Design Artwork

Avatech's Annual Rendering Contest recognizes the country's best rendering talents across manufacturing, civil/GIS and architecture sectors. The winning images can be viewed online at www.avatechsolutions.com/web/contestwinners.

Grand Prize Winning Image: Pennsylvania Aquarium Night Shot, by Dave Johnson

Dave Johnson of Whitney Bailey Cox & Magnani (WBCM) won the Grand Prize for his architectural-exterior image: Pennsylvania Aquarium Night Shot. This 3D model-designed as a marketing piece for WBCM-was created entirely in Autodesk VIZ software. Photoshop was utilized as a post-rendering editing tool to add enhancements such landscaping and people to the scene.

Dave is a graphics illustrator at WBCM, where he works closely with the architects to develop design concepts and 3D modelling. A mechanical designer by background, he's worked with rendering software for 15 years. Avatech Solutions awarded Dave the Grand Prize of a $2000 cruise line gift certificate.

Prize Winning Image: Stater Bros. Markets Headquarters, by Andrew Ransavage

Andrew Ransavage of Leo A Daly won for his civil image: Stater Bros. Markets Headquarters. This winning image-developed in Autodesk 3DS MAX-depicts a new, consolidated corporate office and distribution center for Stater Bros. Markets. The 2.2 million square foot development, located in San Bernardino, California, will service most of the 155 Stater Bros. Markets from this one location.

With extensive experience in 3D modelling, Andrew has worked at the Leo A Daly Minneapolis Office for five years. Andrew received a $250 Amazon.com gift certificate.

Prize Winning Image: Kessler Woods Court, Lot 4, by Ray Bennett

Ray Bennett won for his architectural-interior image: Kessler Woods Court, Lot 4. This image is of an interior space showing a complex stair structure. Lighting was a difficult challenge that Ray overcame for his impressive part interior/part exterior scene. The image, developed using AutoCAD and Autodesk VIZ, was used as part of a marketing package for Hammers Partners Architecture.

Ray is an associate at the Dallas office of RTKL Associates Inc., an architectural firm with several offices around the world. Ray has won several design competitions over the last few years, and also enjoys producing computer renderings as a hobby. Ray was awarded a $250 Amazon.com gift certificate.

Rendering Industry Success

Today, digital design is a critical component of most companies' ability to create and implement successful marketing and sales strategies and campaigns. Avatech recognizes the importance of design expertise as a key competitive differentiator. Accordingly, the annual contest seeks to recognize and underscore the importance of rendering design in the marketplace. The contest is open to architects, building designers, mechanical engineers, civil engineers, CAD designers and design students across commercial, government and educational organizations. Each year, Avatech receives hundreds of submissions for this popular contest that showcases stunning visuals of commercial and residential buildings, products and properties. Former Grand Prize winners have been featured on the cover of Cadalyst magazine and other leading industry publications.

Assuring an Objective, Fair Competition

Each year, Avatech engages a third party expert to help review the submissions-which are kept anonymous until after the winners have been chosen. Finalists are selected 100% on the basis of their images. This year, Derek Bland, President of CMG Studio-a firm specializing in visualization-assisted in submission reviews and short listing. Only after the winning images were selected did Avatech identify who the actual winners were.
