June 3, 2004 Dublin, Ireland - ParallelGraphics, a world leader in the provision of interactive 3D graphics solutions for the Internet has announced that it has ported its Virtual Manuals Enterprise Platform to the 64 bit Intel(R) Itanium(R) 2 processor based system. As a result, the time required for the import and optimization of complex 3D graphical data originated from CAD/CAM/CAE systems has halved.

The Virtual Manuals technology is an open standard solution that enables manufacturing companies to combine their existing 3D CAD/CAM/CAE and PDM data with their operating and procedural manuals to automatically generate Web deliverable interactive 3D simulations - Virtual Manuals. 3D simulations allow complex procedures to be explained in a more intuitive and visually descriptive way than that provided by traditional product support materials.

They do not require translation into foreign languages and can be delivered worldwide via Internet and viewed on standard, Tablet and Pocket PC.

Virtual Manuals are used in wide range of business functions including online training, product maintenance and servicing, and marketing and sales amongst others. Key target markets include the aviation, automotive and defense industries.

The virtual manual creation process involves the import and optimization of 3D data originated from CAD/CAM/CAE systems. To improve processing of complex 3D geometry it was decided to upgrade the server hardware used in the development center of ParallelGraphics and the Intel(R) Itanium(R) 2 based system was chosen as the solution.

To estimate the productivity of the Intel(R) Itanium(R) 2 processor, the company has carried out comparative tests of 32 bit and 64 bit architectures. The results indicate that the productivity of the modules responsible for the import and optimization of 3D data has increased twofold (on average).

"The test results demonstrated the obvious advantages of the 64 bit Intel(R) Itanium(R) 2 based architecture," said Alexander Vovkula, Vice-President, ParallelGraphics. "Utilization of the latest Intel(R) technology allows us to optimize the import of CAD/CAM/CAE data and increase the productivity of the company's data processing center. That will also help us to expand the application areas of the Virtual Manuals technology to the production of 3D interactive part catalogs (IPC) and remote training systems for technical personnel".

Intel(R) Itanium(R) 2 processors provide the unique solution for corporate and research projects that involve support for complex databases and advanced calculation processes and are now used within large-scale companies such as Audi, SAS, Total, and Landmark Graphics corporation among others.

Successful porting of the Virtual Manuals Enterprise Platform to the Intel Itanium(R) 2 based system once again demonstrated the highest potential of this system.
