Intergraph Signs Prestigious Universities from Australia and New Zealand to Registered Research Laboratory ProgramUniversity of Canterbury and University of Queensland Intelligent Transport Systems (UQ-ITS) Research Laboratory are first members in their country to join growing programHUNTSVILLE, Ala., March 1, 2004 - Intergraph Mapping and Geospatial Solutions today announced its Registered Research Laboratory (RRL) Program has signed the University of Canterbury (Christchurch, New Zealand) and the University of Queensland Intelligent Transport Systems (ITS) Research Laboratory, (Brisbane, Australia). With the addition of the new members, the RRL Program has grown to more than 180 educational institutions worldwide since its launch in 2002. The RRL Program works with universities, laboratories and post-graduate institutions around the world to strengthen the future of the geosciences, providing leading-edge technology and development support for non-commercial applied research activities, including development of solutions. Members are granted access to GeoMedia(R) and other Intergraph software and technology subject to specific research needs. "We are pleased to add these prestigious universities and their cutting-edge research to our growing list of innovative and technologically-advanced research activities already underway," said Fiona Hopkinson, Global Program Manager, Education and Interoperability, Intergraph Mapping and Geospatial Solutions. "Research being undertaken by the University of Canterbury and the UQ-ITS Research Laboratory will make an impact on the use of geosciences within their national communities." University of Canterbury awarded GeoMedia Research Grant The first New Zealand member of the RRL Program, The University of Canterbury, has also been awarded a GeoMedia Research Grant of $5,000 (U.S.) cash funding and $50,000 in software. The University will undertake a cooperative research initiative on open standards involving public and private industry. Christchurch City Council will provide data sets used to deliver its wide variety of service and facilities, including roads, water and rubbish collection. During the project, researchers will construct application schemas for Christchurch City Council data sets using Unified Modeling Language(TM) (UML) and various ISO TC211 standards. A generic workflow will then be developed by which these and other application schemas in general can be mapped into equivalent definitions expressed in terms of the constructs provided by Intergraph's Advanced Feature Model. Results of the study will be used to build a basic infrastructure for future University research projects, such as the maintenance of distributed data sets. UQ-ITS Research Facility to use location-based tracking and management for transport safety and efficiency The first Australian member of the RRL Program, UQ-ITS, was established through an Australian Research Council Infrastructure Grant and contributions from a consortium of Australian universities, road and transport authorities and the private sector. The UQ-ITS Research Facility develops and evaluates advanced traffic management and advanced vehicle technologies to improve the safety and efficiency of the transport system. Intergraph technology will be used to manage and maintain core spatial data sets and spatially enable applications for potential projects, including: - - Evaluating traffic management using real-time location information supplied by selected vehicles from state and local government - - Fusing linear road network data - - Tracking probe vehicles - - Managing road incidents, including response management and integration of incident detection - - Enabling weather-responsive traffic management Besides housing state-of-the-art computing platforms, such as traffic simulation workstations and sensor and smart electronics technologies, the facility provides unique, real-time connections to an instrumented test bed for access to field data from sensors, videos and detectors. This allows researchers to test prototypes of systems and evaluate their performance under live traffic conditions. An overview of applied research activities undertaken by RRL members and full research papers are available for download at the Online Research Library.
