Solid Edge Design Contest Winners Named by UGS PLM Solutions

Fourth-quarter 2003 projects exhibit broad range of innovation within the Solid Edge computer-aided design (CAD) community

PLANO, Texas 18 Feb 2004 – UGS PLM Solutions, the product lifecycle management subsidiary of EDS, today announced the winners of its fourth-quarter Solid Edge® computer-aided design (CAD) contest. An aesthetically pleasing powerwheel chair from the Americas, a super-fast computer chip bonding machine from Asia and an innovative boat trailer that can fold up and change dimensions from Europe took top honors.

The Solid Edge contest highlights excellence in mechanical engineering and is open to designers working on more than 150,000 Solid Edge seats deployed around the world. The contest is held to promote the mechanical design excellence delivered by users of 3D solid modeling technology.

Consumer appeal with mechanical prowess

Hoveround Corp. in Sarasota, Fla., took top honors from the Americas with its design of the MPV4 Powerwheel Chair. Hoveround’s Bill Mewhinney, Cliff Merlina and Kevin Tucker used Solid Edge to design the powerwheel chair. Hoveround is the innovator in the design, performance, manufacture and service of power mobility products. Hoveround provides a full line of power equipment from the most basic scooter to the most sophisticated rehab power wheelchair.

Solid Edge judges cited Hoveround’s blending of an aesthetic, consumer-oriented design with an equally important attention focused on the chair’s functional requirements.

High-speed, accurate machinery

The design of a high-speed automatic die (chip) bonder by ASM Assembly Automation Ltd. in Hong Kong, took top honors in Asia. ASM is the leading integrated system and materials supplier to the global microelectronics industry, offering complete factory automation solutions to customers for their assembly and packaging needs.

Solid Edge judges cited ASM’s design of the complex machine for its accuracy and speed. Also noted was the product’s impressive capabilities to carry out a very complex and varied series of mechanical motion within the very large assembly design.

Multipurpose trailer adapts to users’ needs

Mr. Michel Bernard of Matocean in Tourny, France, took top honors in the Europe, Middle East and Africa zone for his Solid Edge design of an innovative, foldable, multi-purpose trailer. The company designs and manufactures a series of trailers used to carry jet skis and other boats, motorcycles and general cargo.

Solid Edge judges praised the design for its innovative approach to solving storage challenges faced by trailer owners. Equally impressive within the design was the trailer’s adjustable length and width, and its multifunction applications -- accomplished through a complete catalog of different bearings that are quickly interchangeable on the same frame.
