Intergraph Emphasizes Spatial Data Infrastructure Interoperability at Seventh Annual GSDI Conference

Intergraph Mapping and Geospatial Solutions executives communicate the position of geospatial technology in global sustainable development

HUNTSVILLE, Ala., Feb. 2, 2004 - Intergraph Mapping and Geospatial Solutions today announced its participation at the 7th annual Global Spatial Data Infrastructure Conference (GSDI-7) being held today through February 6 in Bangalore, India. The global conference brings together professionals who represent national and local government organizations; mapping and cartography agencies; academic and research organizations; and suppliers of spatial data, geographic information systems (GIS), global positioning systems (GPS), and photogrammetry and remote sensing solutions. Participants will focus on policies, technologies and applications for enabling an open spatial data environment throughout the world. The conference also addresses the national, regional and global spatial data infrastructure (SDI) initiatives and requirements while attempting to bring technical convergence on these issues, especially in developing countries.

Spatial data infrastructures are vital to making sound decisions at local, regional, state and national levels for the planning and implementation of sustainable infrastructure development, disaster management support, business development, defense and security strategies and many more important government services. With the advent of GIS technology, spatial data handling capabilities have been transformed, making it necessary to re-examine the roles of governments with respect to the supply and availability of geographic information. Users are now able to process a variety of spatial and non-spatial data formats from disparate sources, improving geospatial analysis and synthesis processes. This leads to new insights into the relationships between real-world objects and causes of phenomena.

Commenting on the event, Bart Hoogenraad, Vice President, Global Marketing, Intergraph Mapping and Geospatial Solutions, said, "As a loyal advocate of initiatives aimed at advancing the role of global spatial data infrastructures, we are delighted to participate at GSDI-7 and to have the opportunity to share our thoughts in helping to foster the evolution of spatial data infrastructures among organizations worldwide. Providing immediate and readily accessible information to policy makers is a critical component to making key political and economic decisions."

During GSDI-7, Intergraph executives will share information and experiences of developing and maintaining interoperable spatial data infrastructures through three presentations, as well as participation in an interoperability tutorial, including:

- - "Enabling Interoperable Spatial Data Infrastructures for Sustainable Development" ? The keynote address by Intergraph Mapping and Geospatial Solutions President, Preetha Pulusani, will discuss the evolution of geospatial data from knowledge creation to information access to true knowledge sharing. Pulusani will share the role of interoperability in making a digital world a reality.

- - "Open Interoperability: From Conception to Realization" ? This presentation by Bart Hoogenraad, Vice President, Global Marketing, Intergraph Mapping and Geospatial Solutions, will showcase customer projects that leverage open technology as the key enabler to achieving results.

- - "Some Lessons Learned Relevant to SDI Building" ? In this presentation, Peter Bartak, Program Manager, Spatial Data Infrastructures, Intergraph Mapping and Geospatial Solutions, sets forth various aspects of the associated challenges of building spatial data infrastructures and offers advice to overcome these challenges.

- - "Demonstrations of Interoperability using Standards and Specifications" - This session in the tutorial program brings together geospatial industry leaders to discuss and display implementations of current interoperability initiatives, including the OGC Web Map Server (WMS), Geography Markup Language format (GML), OGC Web Features Server (WFS) and more. Intergraph is presenting the latest tools taking advantage of various OGC's interoperability related specifications and thus bridging the gap between users somewhat limited by current desktop software capabilities and the ocean of data and information available on the Internet today.
