D-Cubed and EDS PLM Solutions Strengthen Relationship

All D-Cubed assembly components licensed for use in any EDS PLM products

Cambridge, England, 1 September 2003 D-Cubed announces a significant strengthening of its relationship with EDS PLM Solutions, providing EDS with the licensing rights to use all three of D-Cubed's assembly components across its full range of CAD/CAM/CAE/PLM products, including NX, Solid Edge , Teamcenter and E-factory. This wide-ranging deal enables EDS PLM Solutions to cost effectively provide its customers with advanced assembly design, motion simulation and virtual prototyping functionality for the purposes of improving design productivity, reducing design errors and lessening the need to produce expensive physical prototypes.

The three D-Cubed components that are the subject of this agreement are the 3D Dimensional Constraint Manager (3D DCM), the Collision Detection Manager

(CDM) and the Assembly Engineering Manager (AEM). The 3D DCM is used in the majority of today's major mechanical CAD applications, including Unigraphics NX and Solid Edge. It is widely acknowledged as the leading constraint based assembly part positioning, kinematic simulation, 3D sketching and direct (non-history based) part shape modification technology. The CDM, used in many of the most popular MCAD applications, including Solid Edge, pioneered the ability to detect collisions and compute clearances on accurate solids in an interactive assembly environment, minimising design errors caused by interpenetrating parts. The AEM reduces the need for physical prototypes by more realistically modelling the behaviour of assemblies and mechanisms, taking account of the mass properties of parts, the motion caused by a variety of engineering related forces and devices, and the interaction of parts as they collide and push each other around. Animated examples of some of the capabilities of these components are available here.

All of these components are integrated at the core of a CAD/CAM/CAE/PLM application, essentially becoming a part of the application. They have a geometric solution accuracy that satisfies the rigorous demands of the mechanical design and engineering process. They do not resort to the approximations found in many other systems, such as the use of faceted model formats, which are better suited to the less demanding accuracy requirements of visualisation and entertainment applications. For example, the AEM works directly on the accurate solid parts and 3D DCM constraints found in most MCAD systems. Its simple interactive mode of operation requires the end-user to have no specialist motion simulation expertise.

"D-Cubed is recognized as a leading provider of component technology," said Bill McClure, vice president MCAD Products at EDS PLM Solutions. "This agreement allows us to deliver that technology throughout the entire PLM process in applications such as authoring, visualization, mockup and manufacturing. By strengthening our relationship with D-Cubed we further enhance EDS ability to provide its clients with market leading functionality to specify the form, fit and function of the assembly model across our range of PLM products."

"Our two companies have had a successful relationship over many years", said John Owen, Managing Director, D-Cubed, "and I am delighted that we have deepened this commitment to each other. The Solid Edge team have long been early adopters of much of D-Cubed's technology and EDS PLM Solutions have now extended this far-sighted approach across their product line. The growing support of one of the largest organisations in the CAD/CAM/CAE/PLM business will enable D-Cubed to extend our lead in those areas upon which we have unwaveringly focused since the company was founded more than 14 years ago."
