City of Plymouth, England, Selects Intergraph's Web Mapping Solutions to Help Solve Socioeconomic Problems

HUNTSVILLE, Ala., June 9, 2003 - Intergraph Mapping and Geospatial Solutions today announced that Intergraph UK has been chosen to develop and implement Plymouth Informed, the City of Plymouth's Web-based spatial visualization and analysis system, using Intergraph's Web mapping solutions. Integrating socioeconomic information from the city partnership's various agencies and organizations, Plymouth Informed will provide the partners and, eventually, the public easy Web-based access to extensive indicators and geostatistics - such as unemployment, education, drug use and crime - displayed as maps, histograms or tables. The system will streamline information access and analysis, thus resulting in better planning by community leaders to solve the city's socioeconomic problems.

Built using Intergraph's GeoMedia WebMap, Plymouth Informed fills a gap for accurate and reliable citywide intelligence that the local strategic partnership, Plymouth 2020, requires in its quest to develop the economy of the city and renew urban and neighborhood areas. Plymouth Informed aims to combine individual organizations' social and economic information to allow city and partnership leaders to gain fuller insight. This new insight is expected to help better identify and target problem neighborhood areas and subsequently provide coherent responses to the underlying causes of problems rather than individual effects.

"As a truly 'citywide' partnership project, Plymouth Informed is innovative and certainly one of the most accessible systems of its kind," said Gerald Willis, Plymouth Informed project manager, Plymouth City Council. "The problems with data sharing projects must never be underestimated, and the selection of the right system to support these factors is essential. GeoMedia WebMap is allowing us to enter the world of open systems and data interoperability."

"We are delighted to be working with the Plymouth partnership as their vision has great synergy with our own," said Phil Elias, sales and marketing, Intergraph UK. "By approaching the project from the point of view of IT and processes rather than 'GIS,' we can deliver a solution that is far more flexible and cost effective. Both are vital considerations given the rapidly changing and expanding requirements placed on government."

Previously, the partnership made up of eleven community and government organizations and the city council, all worked on disparate systems with no common information technology or network between them. Lacking the resources to easily bring different data sets together, officials exchanged copies of data which then had to be translated and imported into each individual organization's system, often causing data to be displayed using inconsistent views or baselines. This problem was compounded as agencies and organizations were working with different boundary definitions for areas and neighborhoods within the city.

GeoMedia(R)'s robust capabilities to integrate and directly access a broad range of spatial data formats will streamline the task of bringing together all the various organizations' data sources into a single, coherent view. GeoMedia WebMap will allow users to interact with data and analyze information with new insight. Users can zoom in on a map of the city, select the information and area of interest and then view statistical reports of the area or export the data as a delimited text file for use within their own systems or documents.

Initially available internally, the system's planned debut for public use is September 2003 and will include information about Plymouth 2020's neighborhood renewal strategy and progress.
