University of Zaragoza, Spain to Advance Data Interoperability in Spain using Intergraph and AGILE Research Grant

Intergraph software to be used for development of National Spatial Data Infrastructure

HUNTSVILLE, Ala., May 12, 2003 - Intergraph Mapping and Geospatial Solutions, in collaboration with AGILE, awarded the University of Zaragoza, Spain with the inaugural GeoMedia(R) Research Grant for AGILE members, during the recent Association of Geographic Information Laboratories for Europe's (AGILE) sixth annual Conference. The grant will enable the university, an Intergraph Team GeoMedia Registered Research Laboratory, to develop a Web-based national spatial data infrastructure (NSDI) for Spain that includes GeoMedia technology.

The award-winning project will facilitate the exploitation of key public sector information for an extensive list of applications, contributing both to economic development and environmental management of the country. A key objective of the project is to advance interoperability of the spatial data infrastructure, which usually consists of reference geographic data, metadata, and diverse Web services, allowing scientists, company professionals and the general public to more easily and quickly locate and access spatial data. The project will participate in the European Commission's (EC) INSPIRE, INfrastructure for SPatial InfoRmation in Europe, an initiative to create European legislation to guide national and regional spatial data infrastructure development, as well as ongoing activities of the Open GIS Consortium. Entitled, IDE-E: Advances for an INSPIRE-based National Spatial Data Infrastructure in Spain, the Feasibility of GeoMedia Software Components, the project centers on seven key activities and a three year timeline to create the infrastructure.

Muro-Medrano, professor and principal researcher of the IDE-E project, University of Zaragoza. "We look forward to combining GeoMedia technology with our spatial data infrastructure components to promote data access that benefits our country's economy and environment."

As the recipient of this year's annual GeoMedia Research Grant for AGILE members, the University receives $5,000 (U.S.) cash funding and a $50,000 software donation to recognize their exceptional and innovative applied research proposal.

Association of Geographic Information Laboratories for Europe 

The Association of Geographic Information Laboratories for Europe (AGILE) was established in early 1998 to promote academic teaching and research on GIS at the European level and to ensure the continuation of the networking activities that have emerged as a result of the EGIS Conferences and the European Science Foundation GISDATA Scientific Programmes.

AGILE seeks to ensure that the views of the geographic information teaching and research community are fully represented in the discussions that take place on future European research agendas and it also provides a permanent scientific forum where geographic information researchers can meet and exchange ideas and experiences at the European level.
