Sony Unveils Solid Creation Systems for Three-Dimensional ModelingNew Systems Enable High-Definition, High-Speed, Large-format Modeling
CHICAGO (RP Conference, Booth #607), May 12 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Sony Precision Technology America, Inc. (SPTA) today introduced its Solid Creation System series for advanced stereolithography, which the company will demonstrate for the first time at the Rapid Prototyping and Manufacturing Conference here in Chicago from May 13 through May 15. The Solid Creation Systems will enable manufacturers to quickly verify three-dimensional product concepts, prototypes and molds for fast design verification and testing, reducing time-to-market and enhancing product quality and competitiveness. Expected to become available this fall, the new stereolithography systems are designed for companies in various sectors that are seeking shorter product development cycles, smaller lot production capabilities, reduced production costs and improved manufacturing efficiency and greater flexibility. "The Solid Creation Systems combine Sony's original laser lithography system with a special UV-curable resin to set an industry standard for high- definition modeling," said Koh Nakata, vice president of the Sony Manufacturing Systems of America division of SPTA. "The systems open up new possibilities for creativity in manufacturers' product development operations with the ability to easily, efficiently and quickly create multiple high- precision modeling designs for testing." The Solid Creation Systems will be available in three models that integrate the hardware, software and materials necessary to meet the requirements of various modeling and prototyping applications. All systems will include Magics RP user-friendly software and will be compatible with a wide range of UV-curable resin grades with properties close to ABS polypropylene or polyethylene. The system models include: SCS-8000/8000D The SCS-8000 will offer a combination of high-speed modeling and operating ease with one-touch, user-friendly menus. It will be the first machine in the U.S. to employ a high-powered 800 mW, 60 KHz semiconductor excitation single laser for high-speed, high- precision modeling that operates up to four times faster than existing machines. The Dual Scan system will offer substantially shorter drawing times by employing two laser beams simultaneously to reduce drawing time to 1/8 of that achieved by conventional models available today. The single laser Dual Scan system will provide high stability by combining a single laser that emits two beams with two scanners to draw results in a highly stable optical system. SCS-9000/9000D For large format modeling, the SCS-9000 will meet demanding speed requirements with 20 m/s scanning for reliable modeling in sizes ranging up to 1,000mm. This system will also be available with Dual Scan capability and will be ideal for large size models such as automobile instrument panels, large size televisions and refrigerators. SCS-1000HD The entry-level SCS-1000HD system will combine a He-CD laser with a tight beam focus and a special UV-curable resin to attain a high level of performance in high-definition modeling for small parts. About Stereolithography Stereolithography is the process used to convert three-dimensional CAD design images into solid objects. With Sony's Solid Creation System, a CAD designed 3-D model is divided into many thin cross-sectional slices and converted to contour data. An ultraviolet laser employs the contour data as a basis for scanning the surface of UV-curable resin contained in the tank, and a cross-sectioned form is drawn. The laser-scanned surfaces are hardened, and cross-section layers are formed on an elevator, which descends a layer at a time until a 3-D solid model is completed.
