NEEDHAM, Mass., April 28 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- PTC (Nasdaq: PMTC), the product development company(TM), today announced that Windchill 7.0 will encompass the industry's broadest and most sophisticated Java(TM) 2 Platform, Enterprise Edition (J2EE) standards for product lifecycle management (PLM) solutions. PTC is one of the first PLM vendors to support the latest release of J2EE, version 1.4, including J2EE Connector Architecture (JCA), Java API for XML Processing (JAXP) and Java API for XML Messaging (JAXM).

The standards-based open Windchill architecture enables manufacturers to easily configure, deploy, scale and maintain the Windchill solution suite to optimize product development across the digital product value chain of departments, partners, suppliers and customers. The Windchill architecture, in combination with PTC's "Create --Collaborate -- Control" solutions, defines he synergistic requirements necessary for a true product development system to excel in the complexities of today's demanding business environments.

"Companies today recognize the importance of using Internet standards to achieve competitive advantage from Product Lifecycle Information Management," said Joanne Friedman, vice president, Electronic Business Strategies, Meta Group Inc. "As a result, PLM technology must provide a robust, scalable product built on a solid technical and architectural foundation that support standards to address this enterprise need."

Windchill's architecture is:

- - Integral -- consisting of a single data schema, business object and process model, common business services and common user interface look- and-feel.

- - Pure Internet -- written in Java with the broadest and most sophisticated support of J2EE, Web services and Internet standards deploying within existing Internet and security infrastructure.

- - Interoperable -- seamless exchange of product information across common CAD systems, enterprise systems using commercial EAI vendors, Web services and Microsoft .NET applications all using industry-standard interfaces.

Windchill, the first, and only, enterprise-level PLM solution built from the ground up using pure Internet technology and Java, has a history of aggressive adoption of Java standards as they mature, such as: use of Java 1.2, 1.3, and now 1.4 libraries for superior performance, use of JNDI for accessing all user information from corporate directories, JSP Tag Libraries for more efficient JSP scripting, and now JCA for connectivity and JAXP and JAXM for standards-based XML processing and messaging. It also supports other J2EE standards such as Java Server Pages (JSP), Java Servlets, Java Database Connectivity (JDBC), Java Message Service (JMS), Java Mail, Java Naming and Directory Interface (JNDI), Java Remote Method Invocation (Java RMI), and Java Script.

Windchill takes complete advantage of the revolution of the Internet and the advent of Java as a platform neutral application development environment. It is SunTone certified and acquired technologies have been fully integrated at the database, business object model and user interface levels, including, where necessary, being rewritten in Java.

Customers benefit from the Windchill native J2EE implementation with superior modularity, usability, flexibility, scalability, performance, data integrity, security, and interoperability with a host of external technologies via the broadest support for standard Java interfaces.

"PTC is continuing its leadership with the aggressive adoption of proven, native Java-based technology and use of the latest J2EE standards, such as the forthcoming J2EE 1.4," said Jonathan Schwartz, executive vice president, Sun Software Group. "Customers can benefit from this standards-based architecture with the knowledge that Windchill seamlessly integrates with their Internet and J2EE IT infrastructure today and can react quickly to any futuretechnological advances."

"Windchill is the only 100% Java PLM solution," notes Jim Heppelmann, PTC chief product officer and executive vice president of Software Solutions.

"Other PLM vendors claim to have J2EE applications, but in reality they are either a mix of loosely integrated acquisitions or a Java shell on top of older proprietary architectures, written in a mix of languages. Such architectures can be complex, brittle, and difficult or impossible to integrate and scale to enterprise levels. Windchill eliminates the need to maintain both a J2EE architecture and a legacy architecture in parallel."
