Amesbury, MA -- April 25, 2003 -- /Xpress Press/ -- Maptech hosts the largest digital collection of Historic USGS topographic maps on the Internet. This ongoing project is headed by historian Christopher Marshall and compiled through the efforts of volunteer map enthusiasts nationwide. The Historic Maps Collection dates from1885 to the 1950s and includes maps for thirteen states. In addition to the six New England states Historic Maps are available for New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Delaware, Maryland, West Virginia, and Ohio. Through the efforts of volunteers the collection promises to grow to satisfy a diverse group of enthusiastic users. The online collection compliments Maptech's Terrain Navigator and Terrain Navigator Pro titles, which offer the latest USGS topographic maps and aerial photos on CD-ROM. Using the "old" and the "new" maps side-by-side offers detailed perspectives on the past and the present for a variety of users like genealogists, railroad buffs, archeologists and other map related disciplines.

Examples of how some people are using the Historic Maps Collection includes:

Genealogical Research:
"Location is key to finding records that could reveal information valuable to any family history. No genealogist can research with simply a list of names and dates; places are equally important. Maptech's collection of Historic Maps online offers me an easy way to locate old, virtually impossible to find USGS topographic maps for genealogical research. I don't know of a better source for this data." Jackie Marshall, NH

Library Collections:
"We are fortunate that Maptech has agreed to host the Historic USGS Topographic Maps. Many libraries do not have complete collections or they have mistakenly discarded these old editions in the past - they are now available once again in full-color detail and in an easy to use format." David Cobb, Curator, Harvard Map Library, MA

Railroad enthusiasts:
"These maps are invaluable for my history and modeling projects, and to satisfy my curiosity. The Historical USGS topographic maps remain the most accurate and complete source of information for the exact locations of railroad rights-of-way, stations, industries, yards, and sidings. Used in concert with the current USGS maps provided by Maptech's Terrain Navigator, I can locate interesting places with a handheld GPS, scope out access to potential photo spots on active lines, and even construct virtual 3-D views of the landscape for scenery and backdrop modeling projects." Ed Lecuyer, MA

Maptech offers a variety of mapping products for land, sea, and air navigation. USGS topographic titles on CD-ROM include Terrain Navigator and Terrain Navigator Pro (topos with aerial photos at 1-meter resolution).
