Arkansas State Highway and Transportation Department Awarded ARTBA Globe Award for Historic Bridge Project Using Intergraph's GeoMedia Solutions

Web-based solution enables intranet access to historic bridge records providing an easily accessible, centralized data management system

HUNTSVILLE, Ala., March 17, 2003 - At the recent American Road and Transportation Builders Association Transportation Development Foundation's (ARTBA-TDF) third annual "Globe Awards" ceremony, the Arkansas State Highway and Transportation Department (AHTD) was honored for environmental excellence in the statewide preservation of historic bridges through the implementation of the Historic Bridge Management System (HBMS). The HBMS uses Intergraph's GeoMedia(R) solutions to effectively manage historic bridge inventory and enhance mitigation during the historic bridge replacement process by providing an easily accessible, centralized data management system via an intranet. The geo-referenced database gives the AHTD the ability to easily analyze spatial distribution of historic bridges, evaluate bridges for nomination to the National Register or the Arkansas Register of Historic Places, monitor historic bridge replacement, and develop management and preservation plans.

"The implementation of this management system has allowed us to streamline our historic bridge inventory process," said Dan Flowers, director, Arkansas State Highway and Transportation Department. "Data such as date of construction, bridge measurements, scanned historic documents, marketing and replacement documents, and demolition videos are very important to our decision-making process. Having immediate access through the Web to all relevant data that otherwise would have taken us days or weeks to accumulate has significantly decreased the time and cost for a historic bridge replacement project."
