HUNTSVILLE, Ala., March 10, 2003 - Intergraph Mapping and Geospatial Solutions today announced its Team GeoMedia Registered Research Laboratory (RRL) Program has grown to include more than 60 educational institutions worldwide since its launch at GeoSpatial World 2002, the annual Intergraph GeoSpatial Users Community Training and Management Conference. To support this tremendous growth pattern and further promote open interoperability, the RRL Program recently added the GML data server (read-only) GML export command to the expansive list of products currently available to its members.

The RRL Program works with universities, laboratories and post-secondary institutions around the world to strengthen the future of the geosciences, providing leading-edge technology and development support for non-commercial applied research activities, including developing solutions. Members are granted access to GeoMedia(R), GeoMedia Professional, GeoMedia WebMap Professional, GeoMedia Terrain, GeoMedia Grid, Spatial Metadata Management System (SMMS), and SMMS GeoConnect(TM) for research projects. Additional software is also available subject to specific research needs.

Members add research findings, solutions Currently, RRL members are comprised of institutions across North and South America, Europe, Asia-Pacific, and Africa. A wide range of innovative and technologically advanced research activities are already underway, such as the development of wireless education, also termed w-learning. Other projects include the development of navigation devices for the partially sighted, building predictive models using GIS technology to explain ancient Mayan locational decisions, Tuberculosis tracking, and applying modern software techniques and tools to develop geospatial software applications for the planning, design, and operation of network utilities. An overview of applied research activities undertaken by RRL members and full research papers are available for download at the Team GeoMedia Online Research Library.

"GeoMedia technology was successfully implemented in the Railway Time Table Information System (RTTIS), a tour planning geographic information system designed for Indian Railways, the second largest railway network in the world," said Kamal Jain, Department of Engineering professor, Indian Institute of Technology, Roorkee. "The system is expected to be a great help in improving route planning, time efficiency, and cost optimization among passengers. With the positive results yielded by this pilot project, the system could be used effectively for airlines or roadways, incorporating detailed information regarding bus numbers, routes, flight schedules, and more."
