Capvidia Becomes Official Supplier for Audi

Leuven, Belgium - February 10, 2003� Capvidia, a Belgium company, today announced that they are an official supplier to Audi in Ingolstadt (Germany). The work commissioned to Capvidia includes repair and improvements of CATIA v4 models for the die design department.

Streamline and beautiful designs generated by automotive designers using CATIA v4 often lack quality and precision required for the manufacturing of production tools. Improving and repairing complex parts as automotive body panels in CATIA v4 is difficult and time consuming. Depending on the initial model quality the process can take days or even weeks.

A typical body panel includes thousands of surfaces. Many of them can be problematic preventing the CAD system to perform advanced operations required in the die design process. Creating a valid skin and generating an offset surface in CATIA v4 is only possible if the underlined model geometry and topology are valid.

Capvidia�s 3DVision (3DV) software offers specialized tools for repairing CATIA v4 models. The repair process is to a large extent automatically done. It will not take, even for an inexperienced user, more that a few hours to perform the remaining manual repairs on a most complex part.

The automatic repair is performed within the model tolerance without changing or deforming the original model. The results are provided in CATIA v4 native format maintaining the original data structure (layers, attributes and colors). The repaired parts are valid models also for the CATIA v5 system.

To meet Audi�s special requirements Capvidia extended its 3DV software with specialized functions including:

• Diagnostic routines (combined CATIA v4 and 3DV diagnostics)
• Direct support of CATIA v4 native file format (.model)
• 3DV Import/Export Agent for extraction of faulty model entities over the memory structure
• 3DV Workbench for manual repair (in case automatic repair is not possible)
• Advanced approximation algorithms for re-approximation of entities preventing the generation an offset surface (rough offset creation)

The repair process starts from the model diagnostics automatically detecting faulty entities preventing CATIA v4 to perform skin or offset operation. The 3DV Export Agent extracts the detected faulty entities (macro operating on the UNIX workstation) and transfers them to the 3DV Workbench operating on a PC. The imported entities are subjected to the automatic repair resolving over 40 typical problems (errors). In case a fault cannot be repaired automatically the 3DV Workbench offers powerful manual repair tools. Problematic contours or surfaces are easily repaired using regeneration, re-approximation and trimming operations.

Each repaired entity is sent back to CATIA v4 by the 3DV Export Agent and will be automatically stitched to the original model. If the stitching process is successful it will automatically disappear from the 3DV Workbench. In case the repair was not successful, the entity will remain on the 3DV Workbench allowing the user to try a different repair strategy.
