X-Win32 Brings UNIX Desktop to Tablet PCs

First Public Demonstration at DesignCon 2003

SUNNYVALE, Calif., Jan. 29 /PRNewswire/ -- StarNet Communications Corp., a leading publisher of Windows-to-UNIX/Linux connectivity software, will give the first public demonstration of using its flagship X-Win32 X server to turn Tablet PCs into powerful wireless UNIX workstations. At DesignCon 2003 in Santa Clara, January 27-30 (Booth 736) an HP-Compaq Tablet PC will be connected wirelessly to a remote Sun Solaris server running complex EDA (electronic design application) programs used to design state-of-the-art integrated circuits.

"The Tablet PC is a revolutionary device that offers new ways for professionals to increase their job efficiency by being able to take their entire computing environment where notebook PCs are too cumbersome and PDAs too limited. With X-Win32 the functionality of Tablet PCs is further extended to powerful UNIX and Linux servers," said Paul Swart, StarNet Vice President of Sales & Marketing.

Examples of Tablet PCs accessing UNIX servers include:

- - Surgeons and other medical staff taking their Tablet PC into the operating room and accessing X-rays, patient information and other medical data residing on UNIX servers.

- - Automotive engineers pulling up complex 3-D CAD schematics while working under the hood of a new prototype vehicle.

- - IC production engineers taking Tablet PCs into the cleanroom fabrication area to make on-the-fly adjustments to intricate IC production processes and equipment settings.

X-Win32 allows the Tablet PC to access individual X applications or bring up a full UNIX or Linux desktop from one or more networked servers. Data can be tapped directly into the X application using the Tablet's electronic stylus and virtual keyboard. Users can even utilize the Tablet PC's handwriting interface in combination with a text editor to enter data and UNIX commands into an xterm window. "All typical X server functions controlled on a standard Windows computer with a keyboard and mouse, are now also available on Tablet PCs," Swart said.

At DesignCon 2003, StarNet is demonstrating an HP-Compaq Tablet PC. The system uses a built-in 802.11b wireless networking capability to connect to a Sun Solaris 8 server. The Sun server will be running heavy-duty EDA applications, such Virtuoso from Cadence Design Systems that are used to design complex microprocessors and other ICs.

Download and Try

X-Win32 Version 5.4.1 can be downloaded from http://www.starnet.com/products/downloads.asp . A free trial license is available from this page. StarNet also offers complementary use of a Sun Solaris and a Red Hat Linux server as part of its Online Tutorial.

Fast, Friendly and Affordable

X-Win32 provides intuitive point-and-click access from Windows-based desktops to Linux and UNIX servers, including Sun Solaris, IBM AIX, HP/UX, Red Hat, SuSE, Caldera, Mandrake and others. X-Win32 offers both SSH, RSH, REXEC and XDMCP connections between Windows desktop computers and UNIX/Linux host systems.

X-Win32 has been rated the "Best PC X Server" in an independent performance comparison of nine PC X server products published in Network Computing Magazine. The X server is the first to offer fully-integrated SSH functionality. Support for complex 3-D OpenGL applications has also been included.

X-Win32 lists at US$245.00 with volume discounts available for commercial, government and educational users. StarNet offers a concurrent (floating) network license that further reduces customers' cost per seat. X-Win32 licenses include technical support for the life of the license and free upgrade coverage for new releases issued within a year from the date of purchase.
