The Art Institute of Pittsburgh to Launch Virtual Interior Design Bachelor's Degree

Students Anywhere in the World Can Pursue a Bachelor's Degree in Interior Design Through The Art Institute Online

PITTSBURGH, Jan. 29 /PRNewswire/ -- The Art Institute Online, a division of The Art Institute of Pittsburgh, announced this week that it will begin enrollment for students interested in pursuing an online bachelor's degree program in Interior Design. Virtual classes for the degree program will officially begin on April 7, 2003.

The online version of the Interior Design program mirrors The Art Institute of Pittsburgh's traditional, on-ground bachelor's degree curriculum. The Art Institute began its historically successful three-year professional associate degree program in Interior Design by 1945.

Of all 2001 Interior Design associate's degree graduates available for placement, 86.4 percent were employed in an industry-related position within six months of graduation. Under the guidance of a program advisory committee comprised of industry professionals, The Art Institute of Pittsburgh launched its bachelor's degree program in Interior Design in 2000. Of all 2001 Interior Design associate's and bachelor's graduates available for placement, 93.2 percent were employed within six months of their graduation date.

Employment statistics continue to rise.

According to the United States Department of Labor, more than 39,900 Interior Designers are currently practicing in the country, creating and influencing the environments in which we spend our lives. Through a market investigation, The Art Institutes found that the field of Interior Design projects continued growth, with a strong need for designers proficient in specialized technology.

"We are building upon the academic history of The Art Institute of Pittsburgh's Interior Design program," said Ken Sutton, President of The Art Institute Online. "The only difference is that in April, a student can pursue their degree from any location in the world." Through the convenience of a media-rich virtual campus, students receive personalized, accelerated instruction in a challenging six-week format. Students can take courses anytime, day or night, and must participate five out of every seven-day period.

The bachelor's degree in Interior Design consists of 180 credits, with courses designed to provide a careful balance of three-dimensional space, form and function. In early courses, students learn the basics of drafting, color theory and the fundamentals of space planning and perspective. Later, students incorporate computer-aided drafting, and work on projects in the studio that simulate real-life interior design scenarios.

"Our program includes much more than selecting fabrics and learning faux finishing," said Jan Jacobson, Academic Department Director of Interior Design for The Art Institute Online. "Today's Interior Designer plays a critical role in the development or renovation of commercial and residential properties, and is not only a creative influence, but must also possess a wide range of industry and regulatory knowledge."

Graduates of the Interior Design program will be prepared for entry-level positions as commercial designer, residential designer, project manager, facility planner, CAD designer, and designers for specialized fields such as exhibit, furniture, kitchen, or bath design.

The Art Institute of Pittsburgh has graduated more than 2,000 professionals into the Interior Design industry. Notable alumni of The Art Institute of Pittsburgh are succeeding all over the world as Interior Designers as the principals of their own design firms, and as senior designers for corporations such as Marriott International, Steelcase, Herman Miller, Home Depot and Starbucks Coffee Company.

The Art Institute Online began enrolling students in 2000, as a division of The Art Institute of Pittsburgh, offering degree programs in Graphic Design and Multimedia & Web Design. In October, The Art Institute Online expanded its degree offerings to include Game Art & Design.
