ESRI and AirZip Partner to Speed Delivery of GIS Data by up to 800 PercentEstablished Industry Incorporates Premier Image Management Software for More Robust Web-based GIS Applications and Wireless Location-based ServicesSAN JOSE, Calif. and REDLANDS, Calif., Jan. 27 /PRNewswire/ -- AirZip(TM) Inc., the leader in software for securing and speeding networked information, and ESRI, the world's market share leader in geographic information systems (GIS) software, announced an agreement in which ESRI and its partners will resell AirZip Accelerator software as a key component of ESRI's family of GIS solutions, including the flagship ArcGIS and ArcIMS products. ESRI, which distributes mapping and GIS data and services on the Web and wirelessly, selected AirZip Accelerator to enable rich media commonly used in GIS applications -- maps, graphics and other images -- to be delivered up to 800 percent faster than standard delivery solutions via AirZip's patent-pending compression technology. AirZip was also chosen because it provides customizable, plug-and-play acceleration across all devices and networks using existing network infrastructure and standards in the most cost-effective, reliable and scalable manner possible. The agreement adds to a previous arrangement with ESRI and AirZip in which ESRI offered Accelerator through its Geography Network. Under the agreement, ESRI and its partners will make AirZip software available to 300,000 customers worldwide. "Fast image delivery is fundamental to ensuring that we offer the most robust solution possible to our customers," said Mike Tait, director of Internet services for ESRI. "Not only is this true for emerging Web-based GIS applications, but also for the new wireless data solutions, such as location-based services, which require large images like maps to be delivered quickly and efficiently to small devices. With AirZip those maps can not only be large but they can be quickly delivered with layered real-time GIS data for added intelligence and interactivity." GIS: A Thriving Industry in Interactive Web Extends into WirelessGIS has been going strong as an industry for more than 30 years, with geographical mapping solutions implemented across a wide range of industries, such as government, utilities, manufacturing, engineering, real estate and defense. It's estimated that on any given day, more than 1 million people around the world use ESRI's GIS software to improve the way their organizations conduct business. In addition, AirZip's solution overcomes many of the limitations of managing images on mobile devices, by providing panning, zooming and image tiling features, plus animation as well as built-in mapping functionality. "Perhaps the greatest barrier to rapid growth of mobile data services has been the image limitations of devices," said Lee Bauman, president and CEO of AirZip, Inc. "But with the next generation of devices -- the BREW platform from Qualcomm is a good example -- it won't be long before businesses and consumers alike realize the potential of what images can do for them in their everyday lives."
