PTC's Heppelmann Tells Forbes Forum Of New Strategic Enterprise Role For CIOs
NEEDHAM, MA., December 10, 2002 - As product development evolves from a departmental to strategic enterprise function, the role of the chief information officer has become vital to the success of companies seeking to differentiate themselves through great products. Speaking to more than 160 CIOs at the annual Forbes Magazine Forum in Dallas, PTC Chief Technical Officer James Heppelmann stressed the shifting role CIOs are playing in manufacturing companies, "CIOs find themselves front and center, orchestrating strategic integration initiatives across the enterprise, as product development progresses from a departmental focus within engineering to an enterprise focus and, ultimately, to a distributed value chain focus," he noted. "While historically equated with engineering, today's product development process engages manufacturing, marketing, procurement, sales, and service, as well as suppliers, partners and, importantly, customers." PTC (Nasdaq: PMTC), The Product Development CompanyTM, presented the Forum in conjunction with Forbes Magazine. At the two-day event, CIOs from such companies as General Motors, Steelcase, Raytheon, Oracle, Hewlett Packard, FleetBoston and Barnes & Noble discussed how new collaborative approaches accelerate product creation and impact profitability; the role of the CIO in leading product development, and unlocking the hidden value within product development. "Manufacturers today realize that success begins with, and is sustained by, great products," Heppelmann concluded. "To consistently produce great products, companies need a product development process that becomes, in itself, a competitive differentiator."
