LeTourneau Opens the Doors to 3D Modeling with the Solid Edge Computer-Aided Design System from EDSSolid Edge Insight Technology's Design Management Capabilities Implemented In Two Hours
PLANO, Texas - EDS reported today that the LeTourneau Inc. Equipment Group has implemented its Solid Edge? computer-aided design (CAD) system from EDS. The Longview, Texas-based manufacturer of mining, forestry and intermodal equipment evaluated several popular mainstream systems and purchased 25 licenses of Solid Edge for its unique combination of CAD and design management capabilities. For several years, the LeTourneau Inc. Equipment Group has wanted to make the move from its old 2D system to the much more productive environment of 3D solid modeling. But a requirement to include a design management system prevented the move, until now. "Solid Edge and its Insight technology opened the door to 3D for us," said Steve McCracken, Senior Designer/Drafting Supervisor. "Solid Edge allowed us to move into 3D and bypass a product data management (PDM) system that would cost us $200,000 up front and many more dollars associated with implementation headaches and software maintenance fees for many years to come." For McCracken, the Solid Edge Insight solution solved his years-long search for a new system. "The math is easy; $82 per user for a powerful, easy-to-use, built-in design management system for 100 users or $2,000 per user for an awkward bolted-on system that our team would have struggled with." The LeTourneau Inc. Equipment Group immediately implemented the Solid Edge Insight design management capabilities. "We now have Solid Edge-managed data across 25 engineering department employees in our Equipment and Drive Systems groups and another 75 users on the manufacturing shop floor, the service department and in the technical publications department," said McCracken. "And we have moved most of our legacy 2D data into the Solid Edge Insight-managed workspace which means we will be able to leverage all of our previous work." The Insight implementation, which included the installation of Microsoft SharePoint Portal Server, took only two hours. "It was a piece of cake," said McCracken. Other business groups within LeTourneau are now looking at SharePoint for other uses such as document management across the company. The LeTourneau Inc. Equipment Group also based its decision on Solid Edge's modeling and drafting capabilities, ease of use and the ability of import legacy 2D data. McCracken cited strong support from A+ Integrated Solutions, a Solid Edge value-added reseller headquartered in Addison, Texas.
