NEEDHAM, Mass., Dec. 3 /PRNewswire/ -- Leading engineering educators and industry leaders are planning to overhaul mechanical engineering education to meet the needs of industry for a new generation of product designers who understand the opportunities and challenges of Product Lifecycle Management (PLM).

PLM is an emerging business strategy that helps companies achieve revenue growth by managing products throughout their entire life cycle. Technologies that support PLM include computer-aided design, engineering and manufacturing, collaboration and product data management.

At a recent conference sponsored jointly by Brigham Young University (BYU), Carnegie Mellon University (CMU) and PTC (Nasdaq: PMTC), the product development company(TM), leading educators and representatives of the aerospace and automotive industries outlined a series of next steps designed to produce the "PLM engineer of the future." Conference participants proposed integrating PLM into mechanical engineering curricula through classroom instruction, internships, online tutorials and the development of design modules that allow students to experience PLM early in their academic careers.

"PTC's support has been crucial for educators who recognize that PLM is transforming both mechanical engineering and product development," said conference organizer Jordan Cox, a BYU professor of mechanical engineering.
