Axiom releases FileFixer for MicroStation V8

CLEARWATER, Florida, November 16, 2002 - For 17 years, Axiom has provided the Intergraph and (later) the MicroStation communities with independent and objective file analysis and repair. This tradition continues. In response to public demand, Axiom is releasing FileFixer for MicroStation V8.

But we were told

It is evident that Bentley has done a great deal of work to make MicroStation V8 the most robust version of MicroStation ever. V8 data is carefully "validated" (verified for correctness) each time information is read from or saved to disk. This reduces the likelihood that MicroStation V8 itself will introduce erroneous data into a design file. Further, because V8 MDL and VBA applications build upon this foundation, they too are less likely to generate erroneous data. It is not Axiom's position that any version of MicroStation introduces erroneous data into design files. MicroStation/J is pretty darn robust. Nevertheless, our V7 clients who regularly use FileFixer frequently report new design file problems. How can this be? Even if MicroStation (V7 or V8) never introduced any erroneous data into design files, factors beyond Bentley's control still impact your files. Some of these factors are acts of God, acts of Bill Gates, your operating system, your network software, your network hardware, your server, your CPU, your hard drives and your electric power company. Sure enough, our clients have been sending us misbehaving V8 files - and we have encountered many more during our extensive in-house testing. In dramatic contrast to the "simplicity" of a V7 design file, V8 files now have multiple layers between you and your elements. In a nutshell, the simplest V8 design file contains at least six internal "sub-folders" and nine "sub-files". If one of these outer layers is inaccessible, the components within that V8 file won't be accessible either.

Getting off to a fresh start

If you run FileFixer on your V7 files before migrating them to MicroStation V8, you will very likely experience no problems with the result of the migration. FileFixer for V7 is your best guarantee that your V7 files will import into V8 healthy and whole. However, once you begin working with MicroStation V8, you enter the realm of FileFixer for V8.

The tradition continues.

Old-timers may recall that the first version of FileFixer in 1987 offered just a few search and repair options. Then, over the years we added many dozens of additional features to handle specific problems reported to us by our clients. This evolved into the rich feature set of FileFixer for V7.

We are taking a similar approach with FileFixer for V8, but this time the first release includes a lot more than just a few options. The first V8 version includes all of the most-used features from the V7 version, all adapted for V8, plus some new V8-specific features. In summary, FileFixer for V8:

  • Fixes design files and cell libraries at the touch of a button
  • Fixes 2D and 3D MicroStation files in batch
  • Processes models automatically
  • Generates complete reports of the anomalies found and the actions done to fix them.
  • Optionally fixes attached reference files automatically
  • Identifies structured storage problems (related to the sub-files and sub-folders inside each V8 design file)
  • Ability to process files that are larger than 32 megabytes (V7 files had a 32-megabytes limitation)
  • Includes the most-used features from the V7 version of FileFixer, updated for V8. Over two years in the making

FileFixer for V8 has been in development for over two years. Like its V7 counterpart, FileFixer for V8 will evolve in response to client requests. We look forward to hearing from you about FileFixer for V8.
