Dell Systems Break 3GHz BarrierNew 3.06GHz Processor Brings Hyper-Threading Technology to Consumer, Business and Workstation Desktops
SYDNEY, Australia - November 15, 2002 - Dell(tm) today announced availability of the Intel 3.06GHz Pentium 4 processor on Dell(tm) Dimension(tm) 8250 consumer desktops, Dell(tm) OptiPlex(tm) GX260 and SX260 corporate desktops and Dell Precision(tm) Workstations 350 and 340. Dimension 8250 and Dell Precision Workstation 350 customers who purchase systems with a 3.06GHz processor will also have immediate ability to utilise hyper-threading (HT)1, which essentially allows a single-processor system to function as a virtual multi-processor machine. HT technology utilises moments of idle processor cycles by allowing the processor to work on more than one process simultaneously. This efficient use of processing power enables customers to work more effectively with multiple, computation-intensive applications, enabling tasks to be done in less time. Consumers using a HT-enabled Dimension 8250 system can tackle CPU-intensive multitasking operations faster than with a non hyper-threaded processor. For example, users can now convert a video clip from one format to another while watching a DVD without interruption, or edit digital photographs while adding to their digital music collection. A small business owner can continue to enter data in a spreadsheet even while a virus scan is running. Workstation professionals will see performance benefits under complex multi-tasking situations as well as with multi-threaded applications. Digital content creators using a HT-enabled Dell Precision 350 workstation will render more animations in less time. Video editors will likely see a performance increase in transitions and other complex visual effects. Because of the immediate performance benefits that hyper-threading offers consumers, Dell will ship all Dimension 8250 3.06GHz systems with hyper-threading enabled. Since not all of today's workstation applications are multi-threaded, Dell Precision workstation customers will be able to specify HT enabled or disabled at time of purchase. In addition, to provide customers with the greatest degree of flexibility, hyper-threading can be easily enabled or disabled through the system BIOS on the Dimension 8250 and Dell Precision 350. Dell Dimension DesktopsDimension desktops quickly bring new technologies to the consumer and small business markets, offering a complete selection of customised, built-to-order computing solutions for every budget. Dell OptiPlex DesktopsOptiPlex desktops are optimised for networked enterprise environments, with long product lifecycles, industry-standard technology, easy manageability, and a full suite of user-friendly management tools. Dell Precision WorkstationsDell Precision workstations are designed for professionals who require exceptional performance and certification in the digital content creation, engineering, computer-aided design, geographic information systems, computer animation and software development applications.
