NEEDHAM, Mass., Oct. 25 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Tomorrow morning, PTC (NASDAQ:PMTC), the product development company(TM), will join thousands of City Year Serve-a-thon participants to work on vital service projects throughout Greater Boston. As part of the celebration, PTC is an official site sponsor for the Mario Umana/Joseph H. Barnes Middle School and has named City Year as its corporate charity for 2002. After attending the morning kick-off on the Boston Common, nearly 200 PTC employees will head to the Umana Barnes Middle School, Serve-a-thon's largest service site, to work on a variety of projects in and around the school. PTC employees, their families and friends will work alongside more than 100 employees from MFS Investment Management(R) -- the presenting sponsor of Serve-a-thon. Together with City Year Boston corps members, teams will work on a number of initiatives, including the installation of software on library computers; the restoration of the school's soccer field, skate park and amphitheater; the creation of community-themed school murals; and the transformation of the school auditorium into a theater-in-the-round. Located in East Boston, Umana Barnes serves a diverse population of more than 900 African-American, Asian, Caucasian and Hispanic students in the sixth, seventh and eighth grades. "Staff and students are excited about PTC's involvement with our school and community," said Edward M. Cook, principal of Umana Barnes Middle School. "We are looking forward to working with PTC employees during the City Year Serve-a-thon and also to expanding our knowledge and use of the technology tools that PTC provides." "PTC is eager to work directly with Umana Barnes students and City Year corps members, where employees hope to make a difference in the students' lives," said John Stuart, senior vice president of education and community services at PTC. "Anytime we can aid in their overall learning experience, we feel that we are successful because they're successful." As an outgrowth of its participation in the City Year Serve-a-thon projects, PTC has teamed with Umana Barnes as part of PTC's Partnership for Innovative Learning program. Through the program, PTC is promoting technological literacy by donating approximately $40,000 worth of software to the school. PTC's 3D design software, Pro/DESKTOP(R), allows students to master the use of technology and prepare for careers in design, technology and engineering. Umana Barnes has already completed teacher certification training, provided by PTC, and is incorporating Pro/DESKTOP(R) into the classroom. The Partnership for Innovative Learning provides middle schools, high schools and engineering colleges with PTC's Pro/DESKTOP(R) and Pro/ENGINEER(R) design software, affordable teacher training, instructional materials and other key resources.
