Delcam Launches Custom Software Development Service
Birmingham, UK - 7 Oct 2002 -- Delcam is pleased to announce the formation of a new Custom Software Consultancy Group, based at the companys Birmingham headquarters. The Group will undertake bespoke software projects in a range of manufacturing sectors, including the aerospace, automotive, medical and toolmaking industries, and provide solutions built around Delcams Power Solution range of software. "Delcam has recognised for many years that the software we develop to meet the differing demands of our large variety of customers can be refined to produce an optimised or more automated system for a particular application or industry," explained Richard Barratt, the Software Development Manager responsible for the new Group. "For that reason, we have always offered a range of customisation tools with our programs, including the ability to use templates, macros and Visual Basic programming, so that our customers can adapt our standard packages to meet their individual needs. These options allow the user to automate repetitive tasks and so reduce the time and effort needed for new product design and manufacture." "For example, some of our customers have developed variants of our standard software to handle repetitive processes involving batch production, while others have been able to automate their design and modelling processes to save critical process time and to allow the use of operators with lower skill levels or limited experience. In other cases, companies have successfully encapsulated proven process knowledge and standards into their Delcam systems or have increased productivity by closely integrating their software with machine cells." "We also appreciate that many companies may not have the time or the expertise to develop these specialist applications themselves and so we have, for many years, offered to undertake this work on their behalf. In the last year, the demand for these projects has increased, both in their number and their size, so we felt it was the right time to set up a special group to manage them." "We anticipate that most of the work we will be asked to undertake will involve process automation or knowledge-based solutions that can capture the experience of skilled operators within a dedicated software solution," added Mr. Barratt. "In both cases, we expect to be able to be able to offer a very cost-effective service since most of the elements required will be available from Delcams existing software range. This already covers every stage of the product development process, from the creation of the concept design, through to the manufacture and inspection of tooling and sample components." "The strength of our software range will also enable us to minimise any risk to the customer," claimed Mr. Barratt. "In most cases, we should be able to demonstrate that our existing software can provide a manual solution to the problem in a very short time. This will give the customer the confidence necessary to place an order for the development of an automated solution."
