NEWTON, Mass., Sept. 24 /PRNewswire/ -- Graphisoft, developer of the virtual building concept, today announced that the Center for Integrated Facility Engineering (CIFE) at Stanford University in California is implementing Graphisoft(R) ArchiCAD(R) in support of its ongoing research.

In addition, ArchiCAD, the most comprehensive design and documentation tool available to architects, was integrated this semester into a graduate-level scheduling and estimating course that is part of the curriculum in Stanford's construction and engineering program. In the course, students work with intelligent 3D virtual building models created in ArchiCAD and leverage their interoperable connectivity with Timberline's Precision Estimating software to generate project cost estimates.

In future courses, students in construction and engineering classes will also explore other applications of intelligent building models, such as construction phasing and 4D modeling. Through its support of the International Alliance for Interoperability's IFC 2.0 standards, ArchiCAD empowers building professionals to leverage information from intelligent virtual building models for many downstream applications including estimating, design model checking, code compliance checking, production schedule simulation and model viewer applications.

"We are exposing our students to how technology can synchronize the flow of information through the design and construction process," said Martin Fischer, director of CIFE and associate professor of civil and environmental engineering. Fischer will incorporate examples of innovative uses for intelligent building models in the next edition of his McGraw-Hill textbook on construction. "We are fostering an understanding of how new technologies impact the ways that we work and communicate with each other.

Graphisoft is providing an application that is not only good for architects, but also is very useful to other construction and engineering disciplines. That's clearly the direction the industry is taking."

Investigating and developing innovative ways to model, visualize, analyze and evaluate the multidisciplinary performance of design and construction projects is at the heart of CIFE's mission. Faculty members, researchers, students, and professionals from disciplines such as civil engineering, architecture, computer science, business and law collaborate in an effort to optimize information technology management and business issues related to virtual design and construction. By incorporating ArchiCAD into its research, CIFE participants can use intelligent 3D virtual models as the foundation used to capture all relevant information needed for a design and construction project.

"CIFE has been at the forefront of bringing leading edge technology into the building design and construction process with the aim of improving both productivity and the end product," said Chris Barron, vice president, architecture, at Graphisoft US. "CIFE's use of ArchiCAD's single building model, parametric object technology and IFC-level interoperability is pointing the way forward for the industry. Graphisoft shares this vision and is proud to be a key technology partner of CIFE."
