College Student Takes Gold in National Drafting Competition Using ArchiCADMichigan Native Earns Top Honors in SkillsUSA Championships Architectural Drafting Postsecondary Division
NEWTON, Mass., Sept. 16 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Graphisoft US, developer of the virtual building concept, today announced that Lawrence Technical University junior Nathan Meade took the top prize among 39 national finalists in the SkillsUSA Championships architectural drafting-postsecondary division. Meade used ArchiCAD(R) to generate his drawings and designs as he advanced through regional and state qualifying tournaments and in this summer's national championship in Kansas City, Mo. Meade, who transferred this fall from Macomb Community College in Michigan, was tasked with several design challenges over an eight-hour contest during the national final, including designing a house, incorporating customer sketches to change the position of garage from front-facing to side-facing, and amending floor plans for a kitchen and a bedroom layout. Meade started using ArchiCAD two years ago when he began working at Robert Lipka Architect, a firm based in Romeo, Mich. Because ArchiCAD automatically generates floor plans, sections and elevations from an intelligent building model, Meade said he is able to focus his effort on the quality of his designs. "There are so many more capabilities in ArchiCAD, and I find it very easy to use. It showed me a whole different perspective on what CAD can be," Meade said. Though some finalists were unable to complete all of the challenges during the day-long competition, Meade was able to finish all of his designs and submitted 2D drawings for judges to review within the allotted time. "We're thrilled about Nathan's achievement at this year's SkillsUSA Championships," said Chris Barron, vice president of architecture at Graphisoft US. "He's part of a growing population of current and future architects who are implementing ArchiCAD to propel their success by designing and documenting buildings in a seamless workflow."
