SOLIHULL, UK - September 14, 2002 - His Royal Highness The Duke of York performed an unveiling ceremony at TRW Aeronautical Systems, on Friday 6 September 2002, officially opening the new TRW facility at Pitstone Green, Buckinghamshire, UK,

In his role as The United Kingdom's Special Representative for Trade and Investment, The Duke of York arrived at TRW's Pitstone Green site, accompanied by Sir Henry Aubrey-Fletcher Bt, Vice Lord-Lieutenant for Buckinghamshire who formally presented local civic dignitaries and Chris Plumb, Regional Operations Director for TRW Aeronautical Systems who then presented TRW Aeronautical Systems executives to The Duke of York.

The Duke then toured the new facility, and was given a short presentation on TRW's world-leading aircraft electrical power generation and products manufactured at Pitstone Green. His Royal Highness then went on to view the new factory area, stopping frequently to speak to employees, and watch product demonstrations. Major areas that were highlighted to the Duke were; lean manufacturing, and products for Airbus, the Global Express business jet and Sikorsky S92 helicopter. A CAD demonstration showing the latest technology that TRW uses to develop and manufacture various products proved of great interest to The Duke of York.

The Duke of York then proceeded to the unveiling ceremony saying: " Thank you for the invitation to come here today and join you for this important moment in TRW life. You have done an extraordinary job in the way you were able to move with such seamless energy and speed. The visit has been educational."

Before leaving Pitstone by helicopter The Duke of York stopped to speak to 300 parents, local school children and their teachers who gave him a rousing send off.

TRW has relocated to Pitstone Green from its Hemel Hempstead site, where it had been based for 50 years, designing and manufacturing electrical power generation equipment for civil and military aircraft. The new facility provides a layout and infrastructure capability better suited to modern products and technology. The construction project began in July 2001 and was completed in June 2002.

The new facility is designed as a flexible environment with engineering and production staff housed alongside each other in large open plan areas. It will become the centre of excellence for TRW's aircraft electrical power generation business following a number of significant contract wins. Recent wins include variable frequency electrical power generation on Airbus' new A380 aircraft (through a joint venture with Thales). TRW pioneered variable frequency power generation technology, which offers significant benefits in weight, maintainability and through-life costs compared with conventional constant frequency systems.

TRW Aeronautical Systems provides the global aerospace industry with technologically differentiated systems and equipment in engine controls, flight controls, missile systems, power generation and management, cargo handling, hoists and winches, and flexible shafts and couplings, all backed by a worldwide customer support organization.
