Intergraph Process, Power & Offshore and DNV Software Unveil Advanced IntelliShip Marine Design SystemBreakthrough Technology Enables Competitive Edge for Shipbuilders
MALMO, Sweden - September 10, 2002 - The Process, Power & Offshore division of Intergraph Corporation <Nasdaq: INGR> and Det Norske Veritas Software today jointly unveiled Intergraph IntelliShip(tm), advanced software for ship design and construction. The latter announced the DNV Software MarineSolutions(tm) suite, which will include products built on the Intergraph IntelliShip technology. DNV Software will resell the products under terms of the recent reseller and co-marketing contracts signed with Intergraph. The companies plan to commercially release the products in early 2003. The data-centric, rule-based, integrated 3D modeling and 2D engineering software aims to streamline shipbuilding processes, appreciably lower manpower requirements and material costs and significantly reduce overall ship design and construction costs and schedules. The companies are presenting technology previews at the 11th International Conference on Computer Applications in Shipbuilding (ICCAS), which continues here through Sept. 12 at the Malmo Borshus conference venue. IntelliShip Surpasses Current Design TechnologiesThe new IntelliShip software technology is a leap beyond current CAD-based solutions in terms of data-centricity, customizability, productivity, rule-based engineering and integration. The lifecycle toolset addresses conceptual and detail design of ships and components, plan approval, production planning, manufacturing, construction and risk management. IntelliShip frees shipbuilders from the constraints of now-outmoded systems. Legacy or current architectures are limited in their support of future shipbuilding work process demands - now answered by IntelliShip - including data re-use, global work sharing and distributed engineering, configuration management, cost optimization, lifecycle data management and business system integration as well as Web access to both graphical and tabular information. IntelliShip is highly customizable with standard Microsoft programming tools to answer individual shipbuilder's work processes, engineering rules, standards and other unique requirements. IntelliShip provides full access to engineering data - capturing graphics and associated information as well as behavior and design intent - and is the foundation of a shared repository for all ship design, construction and management information. Accurate, current data is accessible to all users in the appropriate graphical or tabular view for each task. DNV Software MarineSolutions Boosts Efficiency, Data AccessThe DNV Software MarineSolutions will address integration of design and analysis tasks within and among different disciplines. This will enhance today's CAD and CAE technology and place increased functionality in the hands of marine designers and engineers. The result is more efficient concurrent engineering work processes, leading to faster, more economical and better design, engineering and construction. MarineSolutions uses a digital product model to coordinate and carry out the various work process activities. The product model thus becomes a common information base for further use throughout the ship lifecycle. Combined Benefits Offer Increased Competitive AdvantageThe IntelliShip technology offers a number of major benefits that combine to significantly enable increased competitive advantage. These include reduced man-hours, accelerated schedules, production planning integration, design standardization, improved inter-discipline and subcontractor communication, lowered training costs and reduced IT infrastructure expenses. To reduce man-hours, the software allows high-level design decisions to be propagated to detail parts automatically. Rule-based automation eliminates many repetitive operations in detail design. For accelerating design, fabrication, procurement and construction schedules, IntelliShip eliminates many of the sequential dependencies of the traditional design process. The concurrent, global worksharing environment allows design and production planners to participate very early and incorporate cost saving ideas easily. To standardize design and support design re-use, rule-based automation encourages standardization by making it easier for users to create standardized details than non-standard details. The environment promotes more effective communication among disciplines through concurrent communication. As soon as a design is ready or a change is made, it is immediately available to all disciplines simultaneously. Running on PC hardware, standard Microsoft operating system software and featuring a familiar Windows user interface and usability of common programming tools for extended integration, IntelliShip helps reduce IT infrastructure, staffing and maintenance costs. Supports Multi-discipline Work Processes ConcurrentlyThe 3D modeling and 2D environments encompass major multi-discipline tasks, including catalogs and reference data; automatic drawing generation; electrical diagrams; equipment modeling; hangers and supports; HVAC and cableway routing; real-time interference detection and clash management; manufacturing planning; molded forms; nesting; outfitting structure; penetration management; pipe diagramming, routing and manufacturing; project management; reporting; structural detailing and manufacturing; and weight and center of gravity calculations and management. Heralds Obsolescence of Existing Ship Design SystemsElling Rishoff, managing director, DNV Software, said, "Given DNV Software's track record in producing software solutions for ships, offshore analysis and lifecycle management, we are confident the new functionality offered by the integration of the IntelliShip solution will offer significantly increased competitive advantage for users in the marine and offshore industries." Gerhard Sallinger, president, Intergraph Process Power & Offshore, said, "Visionary shipyards are citing the inability for concurrent work processes, integration and lifecycle information automation in today's commercial systems. Through IntelliShip, Intergraph and DNV Software are answering these and other needs of global shipbuilders." Torben Andersen, chairman of the board of directors, Global Research and Development Co. Inc., said, "As evidenced by successful, real-world testing by GRAD, the IntelliShip productivity features are unsurpassed by any legacy application available. The cumulative effect of these features will result in a step-change in ship design and production processes and the rapid obsolescence of existing ship design applications." In his role as a member of the ICCAS International Program Committee, Andersen today introduced DNV Software and Intergraph officials at a joint press conference. Testing, Final Certification ContinueThe Global Research and Development Co. Inc. (GRAD) consortium is testing IntelliShip on ship design and production projects at member company shipyards in Europe and Asia. GRAD members continue to report test results that demonstrate measurable, significant improvements over current design systems, according to Andersen, who also cited the shipyards' enthusiasm for adoption of the full production, commercial version of IntelliShip. GRAD, headquartered in Hampton, Va., represents several major, worldwide shipbuilders.
