CADCAM-E Working with AIAG, OEMs and Tier 1's to Improve Interoperability
August 30, 2002 - CADCAM-E, a leading supplier of engineering IT products and services, is working closely with the Automotive Industry Action Group (AIAG), original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) and the supply chain to improve product data interoperability. Emery Szmrecsanyi, Technical Advisor for CADCAM-E, is serving as the co-chair of the AIAG's Collaborative Engineering and Product Development Vehicle Product Data Project Team. The mission of this team is to provide enablers for achieving cost savings, lead-time reduction, and quality improvement in global automotive supply chain processes through collaborative efforts involving the use of vehicle product data. For example, the team is working closely with OEMs and Tier 1 and 2 suppliers, the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) and PDES, Inc., to develop a flexible, standards-centric and extensible approach to design and engineering collaboration within the extended automotive enterprise while avoiding expensive systems integration. To this end, the Supply Chain PDM Interoperability Pilot Project, which started in July 2001, will demonstrate how the automotive supply chain can exchange PDM plus CAD data in a realistic setting utilizing existing PDM standards and commonly available Internet mechanisms. Also the project team is currently developing international guidelines for engineering technical data delivery notes as well as gathering and disseminating information on visualization practices, guidelines and technologies. Vinay Wagle, President of CADCAM-E, said that the company has invested heavily in product data interoperability standardization efforts because of its ever-increasing importance throughout the global automotive supply chain. "Since we work with suppliers in all of the various tiers, we understand the critical role that data exchange has come to play in the global supply chain," Wagle said. "To trim operations and reduce costs, OEMs are shifting non-core functions to suppliers - requiring them to perform and integrate additional manufacturing steps and take on more design and analysis responsibilities. Meeting these challenges often comes down to the ability to exchange data without sacrificing integrity and accuracy or requiring extensive manual effort. We provide a wide range of web-based tools and cost-effective offshore engineering services to help suppliers at all levels of the supply chain meet these challenges. Our work with the AIAG means that we are able to quickly implement the latest standards in our products and also makes it possible to provide input to the standards process that helps ensure it meets real-world industry needs." Wagle's presentation "CAD/CAM Data Translations: Strategies and Success Case Studies" at the AIAG's AutoTech 2002 conference is an example of how important this topic is to the company. Wagle said that the importance that the company attaches to the role of the AIAG is illustrated by the fact that for the last year it has assigned Szmrecanyi, a leading industry expert, to the role of liaison with the group. Szmrecanyi spent 32 years at DaimlerChrysler where he managed teams with various responsibilities including surfacing development, application software development and support, CAD data exchange and translation support both in-house and with suppliers and CAD data quality standardization. He saw the need for Chrysler to take an active role in the standards development process and consequently became involved with AIAG, the IGES/PDES Organization (IPO) and the U.S. Technical Advisory Group for STEP. He also represented his corporation on the Board of Directors of the U.S. Product Data Organization (US PRO). About CADCAM-ECADCAM-E delivers the cost savings and lead-time advantages of an offshore solution to engineering-focused organizations such as original equipment manufacturers, suppliers and engineering software developers. The company offers both offshore software development and engineering services and its team has extensive knowledge of and experience in both mechanical design and CAD/CAM software. Its position as one of the leading developers of CAD/CAM translation software gives its the ability to work with data from any CAD/CAM system and to incorporate seamless data exchange between different systems in all of our products and services.
