NEEDHAM, Mass. - August 26, 2002 -  /PRNewswire/ -- PTC(R) (NASDAQ:PMTC), The Product Development Company(TM), today announced that a number of its products have been designated "Industrial IT-Enabled" by ABB -- a leading provider of power and automation technology products and a PTC customer. ABB's Industrial IT Initiative is designed to facilitate real-time integration of diverse products by standardizing the presentation of product information to a uniform architecture.

As a key global supplier to ABB, PTC submitted its products for evaluation in line with Industrial IT standards. ABB tests and certifies its own products, along with those of selected partners, at one of four levels - Information, Connectivity, Integration, and Optimization - depending on the complexity of the product and required connectivity to other systems. All certified products must be "Information-Enabled" with documentation, drawings, and other asset management information provided in consistent electronic form.

ABB uses software products from PTC -- including Pro/ENGINEER(R), PTC's industry-leading product design and development software, and more recently, Windchill(R) solutions for project collaboration and product data management - - as part of its strategy to improve engineering productivity, rapid customization, and cost reductions.

"We are very proud that ABB has named PTC's products Industrial IT- Enabled," said Trenton Brown, executive vice president, international sales, PTC. "We are looking forward to helping ABB Group companies, as well as ABB customers, take full advantage of the Industrial IT environment.

ABB currently uses PTC products to tackle design engineering issues, and has implemented Windchill technology to solve collaboration and control problems. The power of PTC's vision really comes to life when our software solutions are used to enable engineers, suppliers, and customers to work together - fulfilling mass customization requirements more quickly and at lower cost."

A recent report from AMR Research noted that 16% of companies are actively evaluating mass customization techniques, and a further 11% expect to adopt mass customization by the end of 2005.

Nigel Montgomery, director of European Research at AMR commented, "Mass customization requires manufacturing operations and their relative supply chains to be efficient, fast, agile, responsive, and any other action word you can think of."

Included in the list of products now ABB Industrial IT-Enabled is PTC's Pro/ENGINEER, a leading 3D product development solution that enables designers and engineers to create superior products and bring them to market faster. Spanning the entire product development process, from creative concept, 3D model, assemblies and drawings through simulations, NC-programming and photo realistic presentations, Pro/ENGINEER delivers measurable value to ABB and its partners. Ten PTC software packages/modules, which are extensively used within ABB, are currently Industrial IT-Enabled.

PTC Windchill technology offers a robust collaborative architecture that is the foundation for a broad suite of product lifecycle management solutions. Leveraging state-of-the-art Web-based technology, Windchill provides a scalable collaborative environment for managing product data and processes, from concept to retirement. Windchill allows enterprises to integrate business processes and product data with dispersed divisions, partners, and customers. Twelve Windchill packages/modules, also widely implemented within ABB, are now Industrial IT-Enabled.
