Delcam Software Provides "A Breath of Fresh Air" for South African Toolmaker

August 19, 2002 - The use of Delcam software has completely changed the way moulds are designed and manufactured at Novate Industries, a leading South African toolmaker based on the outskirts of Johannesburg. Mirko Tappero, who generates CAD and CAM programs with the software as well as being one of the company's three directors, stated, "When we originally decided to move on from our initial "high-end" CADCAM solution to Delcam software, the transition was like a breath of fresh air."

Mirko compared how they had to operate, to the way they have worked since the Delcam software was introduced - "We used to have to repair CAD data, wait ages for CNC programs to be generated, cut in wood, tweak the program, cut in wood and so on, until finally we would start machining in steel."

"With Delcam, things are totally different. Firstly, the translators in PowerSHAPE are excellent. We do not encounter the problems most CAD systems have when we receive data from other software. With PowerMILL, even extremely complex tool paths only take 6 to 8 minutes to create and 15 to 20 minutes to process. We are so confident in the software that we send the results directly to our various CNC machines without even verifying them."

Novate Industries, which was founded some twelve years ago, provides both local and international companies with tooling for intricate and complex plastic and cast components. The company now has 35 staff comprising mainly designers, mould makers and machinists, and operates one CNC lathe and six CNC machining centres, two of which are new HSM machines.

Novate has recently expanded its facilities with an additional seat of PowerMILL. "Before we purchased our extra seat," said Mirko, "we decided to do an extensive evaluation of numerous other CADCAM systems. We again realised that Delcam software is in a league of it's own."

"Over the years, we have been spoilt and often forget how much time and money Delcam is saving us," Mirko states. "With PowerSHAPE and PowerMILL, there is no component that we have not been able to design and machine."

Mirko has also been impressed by Delcam's South African representative, AZtech CNC Manufacturing Solutions. "A good CADCAM system also requires the right backup and support," he concluded. "We have had numerous dealings with various CADCAM suppliers over the years and our experience with AZtech has been very positive. It has the largest support infrastructure and the staff's reaction times and methodologies are excellent."
