PLANO, Texas - August 7, 2002 -  /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- EDS (NYSE:EDS) reported today a team of students at Xi'an Jiao Tong University won first place in the Solid Edge(R) computer-aided design (CAD) contest entered by students across China.

China's Ministry of Education (MOE) and EDS sponsored the design contest, open to the more than 120,000 students who have been trained in Solid Edge across more than 240 institutes of higher education. More than 20,000 licenses of Solid Edge are implemented at the Chinese universities and colleges.

Judges representing the schools, the MOE, EDS and Chinese industry honored four design team members from Xi'an Jiao Tong University for their series of designs ranging from industrial machinery to aerospace and automotive products. The winning team members are Feng Xiaohui, Huang Ting, Gao Fang and Zhang Guanjun.

Second place went to the Changsha Institute of Technology and Harbin University of Science and Technology. Third place was awarded to five schools: Shanghai University, Changzhou Vocational & Technical School of Engineering, South China University of Technology, Anhui University of Technology and Chengdu Aeronautic Vocational & Technical College.

"Honoring these students and showcasing their design work helps communicate the powerful 3D solid modeling design capabilities attained by engineers who are entering Chinese industry," said Chen Jie, president of EDS PLM Solutions in China. "It is gratifying to see the excitement Solid Edge has brought to these students and professors and how quickly they have become skilled with the software."

In September 2000, UGS -- which EDS acquired last year -- announced a major multi-million dollar investment with the MOE to train the future engineers of Chinese industry with Solid Edge. The acceptance of 3D solid modeling is expected to benefit China's manufacturing sector as the nation increases the range and complexity of products manufactured for both domestic and international markets.

"The ease of migration from 2D to 3D with Solid Edge makes it the top choice for companies looking to implement advanced product development technology," said Zhang Fu Run, Secretary General of the MOE committee of Academic Mechanical Science. "The Ministry of Education further believes that Solid Edge provides the best interface for learning 3D design."
