FIPER Workshop Unveils New Vision for Design Collaboration

CLEVELAND - August 7, 2002 -  /PRNewswire/ -- Engineous Software, Inc. recently hosted a workshop that showcased the cutting-edge technologies being forged by the Federated Intelligent Product Environment (FIPER) Team. The project is a joint collaborative initiative co-funded by industry and the U. S. Department of Commerce's NIST Advanced Technology Program (ATP).* Attended by 150 industry, government, university and vendor participants, the July 18 workshop was held in Arlington, Virginia. The project, two and a half years into its four-year duration, has now reached the commercialization phase. As the commercialization agent for the FIPER project, Engineous will release the first version of a commercial product in 2003.

The ultimate goal of FIPER is to significantly reduce the time it takes to create robust product designs, potentially saving manufacturers more than $2 billion annually. Facilitated by OAI, the collaborative team includes Engineous Software, GE, Goodrich Corporation, Ohio University, Parker Hannifin, and Stanford University.

Representatives attended the conference from manufacturing and research companies around the world. "A very important goal of the FIPER system is that it works across multiple industries in a standards-based environment," said Antoinette McDonough, Collaborative Research Director at OAI. "The FIPER Team and the members of Engineous' Industrial Participant Program have brought a wide breadth of knowledge to the development effort," she added.

"FIPER will enable Parker to work more closely with customers, reducing costs for all parties," according to Dr. Michael Benjamin, Manager of Research and Development at Parker Hannifin Gas Turbines Fuel Systems Division. "Parker expects this can ultimately be driven to the sub-tier supplier base."

The workshop afforded a glimpse of the future as FIPER team members presented a vision for horizontal (intra-organizational) and vertical (supply chain) design collaboration offered by this emerging technology. Demonstrations elucidated the power of this vision, which goes far beyond file sharing and CAD translation. The progress of the team in areas such as secure, business-to-business design interoperability, cost estimation, and improved productivity was clearly and convincingly illustrated by demonstrations, representing a quantum leap that truly enables lean design engineering.

Engineous Software impressed attendees by creating a detailed aircraft wing design process "on the fly" in a flawless, live demonstration. Through the demonstration, participants quickly recognized the potential of FIPER and the impact it will have on the design process, productivity and enterprise- wide cost savings.
