Leading Pewter Manufacturer Adds Delcam Software

August 1, 2002 - Royal Selangor, one of the oldest and best-known names in the pewter industry, has selected Delcam's Power Solution software for its move into three-dimensional CADCAM. The company has specified Delcam's PowerSHAPE, PowerMILL and ArtCAM for the design and manufacture of its growing range of products.

Founded in 1885, Royal Selangor now offers over one thousand different tableware and gift items, from traditional tankards and tea sets to photograph frames and desk accessories. The company's main manufacturing site in Setapak, Malaysia, is the world's largest pewter factory, with a workforce of more than 600 skilled craftsmen.

"We had used a range of 2D software for some time and had been toying with the idea of moving to 3D for several years," recalled Mr. Wong Kok Nai, Manager of Engineering Development. He started the company's conversion by investing in CNC machining and by using the software supplied with machines.

However, Mr. Wong soon realised that the complexity of the pewter designs would require something more powerful. After reviewing the various options available, he drew up a short list of five companies for an initial investigation and then undertook a detailed comparison of two systems.

The comparison highlighted three reasons for choosing the Delcam software. "The combination of PowerSHAPE and ArtCAM seemed to fit our design needs very well as we could quickly develop the overall shape in PowerSHAPE and then add very complex decoration with ArtCAM," said Mr. Wong. "Similarly, PowerMILL was very strong in the CAM area. Finally, it appeared that all three packages would be easy for our staff to learn."

The ease of use has been critical for Royal Selangor. "Initially, it was a challenge to persuade our machinists to change to new technology but soon they were progressing well," recalled Mr. Wong. "Now, we know that anyone with the desire to learn can pick up the skills. We quickly found a way around any problems that came up."

It was not long after the manufacturing department bought the first Delcam software that the design department staff decided they also had to have it to allow more efficient development of new designs. "With 2D software, you don't know what the object really looks like," explained Mr. Wong. "With 3D models, it is possible to see the designer's ideas more clearly. This eliminates a lot of to and fro between departments. It has also helped us improve our quality and consistency and has encouraged the designers to think more about manufacturing."
