PTC to Host "Designing Our Future" Technology Education Conference

Industry Experts, Government Officials and Educators to Focus on Ways to Help K-12 Students Achieve Technological Literacy

NEEDHAM, Mass. - July 30, 2002 - Some of the nation's foremost technology educators will attend the first annual "Designing Our Future" technology education conference sponsored by PTC (Nasdaq: PMTC), the product development company?, at the University of Massachusetts-Boston campus on August 5, 2002.

The free conference is designed to support progressive educators from around the country who wish to prepare students to succeed in a technological world, and to inspire them to choose technology careers in which they'll design the superior products of tomorrow.

The conference will begin with a general session focusing on the growing technology education movement within the nation's primary and secondary schools. It will follow with a series of breakout meetings in the afternoon, focused on practical teaching techniques and project-based learning delivered through PTC's Partnership for Innovative Learning.

Featured speakers include:

  • David Driscoll, Massachusetts Commissioner of Education;
  • Dr. Michael Wright, president, International Technology Education Association (ITEA), the largest professional educational association, principal voice, and information clearinghouse devoted to enhancing technology education through experiences in schools (K-12);
  • Greg Pearson, National Academy of Engineering, editor of "Technically Speaking ? Why All Americans Need to Know More About Technology," a recent report resulting from a two-year study by the Committee on Technological Literacy;
  • Professor Jim Burns, San Diego State University, whose students won a national competition for design of a hybrid electric car;
  • Devin Lucas, software engineer VI, HP; and
  • John Stuart, senior vice president, PTC.

The Partnership for Innovative Learning is the educational component of PTC's Product First initiative, which provides product-focused companies with solutions critical to the product development process. The partnership provides middle schools, high schools and engineering colleges with PTC's Pro/DESKTOP� and Pro/ENGINEER� design software, affordable teacher training, instructional materials and other key resources. Teachers who attend the conference will:

  • Hear progress reports on the technology education movement;
  • Share best teaching practices;
  • Network with peers from around the United States and United Kingdom;
  • Receive the latest project-based materials for use in the classroom; and
  • Learn about and discuss the future of engineering technology in the classroom, and participate in an interactive session with the Pro/DESKTOP development team.
