MINNEAPOLIS - July 24, 2002 - /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Vital Images, Inc. (NASDAQ:VTAL), a medical imaging software company, announced today that 3Dlabs Inc., a supplier of graphics accelerator solutions, is showcasing Vital Images' Vitrea(R) 2, Version 3.0 at SIGGRAPH 2002, July 23 to 25, in San Antonio, Texas. Vitrea 2 will be demonstrated in booth 19086, running on 3Dlabs' newly introduced Wildcat(R) VP family of workstation-class graphics accelerators. SIGGRAPH 2002 is sponsored by ACM SIGGRAPH, the leading professional society for the computer graphics and interactive media industry.

"Vital Images is committed to staying at the forefront of medical imaging technology and making Vitrea 2 the most competitive software product in the industry," said Jay D. Miller, Vital Images president and chief executive officer. "Working with technology innovators like 3Dlabs is an important strategy to ensure our leadership position in the medical imaging market."

"Vital Images has been an important application provider for our customers over the years," said John Schimpf, director of developer relations at 3Dlabs. "Their team has provided valuable input during the design and testing of the Wildcat VP accelerators and will continue to influence future generations of our visual processor product family. In addition, Vital Images has been very helpful during our early development of the OpenGL 2.0 API specification."

At SIGGRAPH 2002, Vital Images' technical staff will give several presentations illustrating how the emerging high-level shading language of OpenGL 2.0 facilitates implementation of advanced volume rendering algorithms. "3Dlabs' prototype of the OpenGL 2.0 shading language running on the Wildcat VP allows us to investigate new enhancements for our rendering software," said Dr. Karel Zuiderveld, director of advanced technology at Vital Images. "The combination of highly programmable visual processors, such as the Wildcat VP, and emerging high-level shading languages, such as OpenGL 2.0, represent a paradigm shift in consumer graphics technology and our approach to volume rendering of medical data."

Vital Images recently joined the OpenGL Architectural Review Board, the multi-vendor body charged with maintaining and extending OpenGL as the industry standard for high-performance 3D imaging. The company is a non- voting member and is participating in the definition of the upcoming OpenGL 2.0 specification.
