Varian Inc, Chooses Intercad's Range of 3D CAD Tools for the Design of Their Optical Spectroscopy Instruments
Frenchs Forest, July 5th 2002, Intercad Pty. Ltd., technological solution suppliers for mechanical designers, engineers and manufacturers, announce the adoption of SolidWorks range of mechanical design solutions by the Melbourne-based Optical Spectroscopy Instrument division of Varian, Inc. Varian, Inc. (NASDAQ: VARI) is a world leader in providing key tools and technologies that enable advances in the life sciences and health care, semiconductor processing, communications, and a broad range of dynamic industries. The Melbourne division designs and manufactures all the Spectroscopy instruments for the Varian business. In Australia alone, they have received a number of Australian Engineering Excellence awards for their products as well as numerous patents and export awards. Since 1999 they have been changing their existing hybrid CAD set-up to SolidWorks 2001 Plus, with plans to complete the rollout over the following months with the acquisition of a few more licenses. According to Steve Lever, Varian's Mechanical Engineering Manager, the choice to switch to SolidWorks came down to the following factors: ease of use; ease of learning; level of support provided by Intercad; cost; potential to integrate other engineering processes in the future. e.g. CAM, assembly instructions, wiring harnesses, finite element analysis, product data management, etc.; "Our operation in Walnut Creek, Ca, also uses SolidWorks, so we felt that any future collaboration would be smoother if we also used SolidWorks." he said When asked how SolidWorks improved Varian's design productivity, Steve Lever responded "We have been able to iterate the design many more times within the available time constraints, thereby releasing a design requiring less rework during prototyping and pilot builds. The ability for non-CAD people to readily visualise the product or subassembly has helped greatly, particularly in specialised technical areas where our physicists were able to eliminate numerous non-feasible designs. Traditionally we would have had to conduct laborious experiments to get through this elimination phase. Using only SolidWorks 2001Plus we have been able to complete the styling for a new instrument. We will use the CAD data to produce a foam model for final approval. Traditionally we would have used an industrial design company for this task."
