Digital 3D Design Helps Australian Kart Company To Winning FormulaVictorian Built Karts Clean The Board At Top International Karting Grand Finals
Australia, June 17, 2002- Autodesk, Inc (Nasdaq: ADSK) the world's leading design software and digital content company, today announced that Drew Price Engineering (DPE), an Australian based kart and karting-component designer, took the top positions at the 2002 Rotax Max Challenge Grand Finals in March this year with a new kart designed using digital 3D design software from Autodesk. Developed using Autodesk's Inventor software, DPE claims the increase in design and development performance is now paying dividends on the track. Four DPE designed karts finished in the top ten at the 2002 Rotax Max Challenge Grand Finals, including the winner, South African Claudio Palazza-Musso, as well as the Australian winner in the +35 years category, Darrell Smith. The championship is contested by 75 drivers from 29 countries. According to Drew Price, managing director of DPE, "Using the latest 3D design system we can now stress test designs digitally, before moving to the physical prototype phase. By automating drawing production we've also made design revisions easier and reduced engineering cycle times. Together this is a winning combination and leads to better design and better performance." To reduce the need for prototyping and physical testing, DPE combined Autodesk Inventor with Cosmos Finite Analysis, a mechanical testing program. By sharing the digital design data between Inventor and Cosmos, DPE is able to apply loads and forces to the chassis, rigorously testing its strength, flexibility and durability. Once road-worthiness is achieved, exterior bodywork detailing is also conducted with the digital 3D model, using simulated materials such as steel, aluminum, plastic and fibreglass. For DPE, the 3D digital designs extend beyond the engineering team, helping the company to market its karts overseas. According to Drew Price, managing director of DPE, "International clients are able to see the finished product on the screen in front of them and are assured of the kart's functionality before they even lay hands on a physical model." Based in Melbourne, DPE currently exports its award-winning karts and karting products to 15 countries around the world, including the US, UK, Canada and Japan. The Autodesk Inventor system was implemented through Autodesk valued partner Envision IT. Andr Pravaz, Autodesk Regional Director for the South Asia Pacific, said, "DPE's reputation for high-quality, competitive designs has made it a leader in the karting world. Its use of Autodesk Inventor to streamline their design and business processes shows the clear benefits of digital 3D design."
