EDS Donates $7.6 Million in Software to Miami-Dade Community CollegeEDS PLM Solutions' Unigraphics will be used for technical training center for Latin America and South America
PLANO, Texas - EDS today announced that Miami -Dade Community College (M-DCC) will use a $7.6 million technology grant from EDS PLM Solutions to expand the school's computer-aided design and manufacturing programs. The software and hardware package will be installed at the Emerging Technologies Center of the Americas (ETCOTA) and used college-wide will provide state-of-the-art computer integrated manufacturing capabilities. The college will use the state-of-the art computer-integrated and manufacturing capabilities to offer a complete curriculum, including design, engineering and production. The curriculum provides an opportunity for ETCOTA to become a Unigraphics technical training center for Latin America and South America, where the system is widely used. "Local companies like Gables Engineering, Piper Aircraft, and Pratt-Whitney use this software for their designs," said Michael J. Cubbin, M-DCC's Director of the School of Computer Information Systems and Design Technology. "As we implement this system, we will work with firms around the world to establish M-DCC as a major training provider for their operations. Students who earn vendor-based certifications will be qualified for high paying design and drafting jobs in the manufacturing industry." Adding this system is a natural extension of M-DCC's current Design Technology and Architecture curriculum, since it is already offered by many of the major engineering schools in the country. Once the computer aided manufacturing program is received this summer, instructor training will be the first priority. "M-DCC's enhanced curriculum will address the business imperatives that arise from today's digital economy to challenge the way companies manage their product lifecycles and establish their competitive effectiveness," said Dan Edwards, Southeast Sales Director, EDS PLM Solutions. "We believe that EDS must help academic institutions increase the skills of the workforce, introduce the most advanced technologies and improve product lifecycle management. We are proud to team with M-DCC's strong academic leaders and gifted students in improving manufacturing in the greater Miami region and beyond." "With this grant, Miami-Dade Community College will meet a regional need by providing an expanded component of our two-year engineering science and manufacturing related technology and training programs and by producing skilled operators in the latest tools for computer aided industrial design," said Cubbin. "We also have potential to support many U.S. customers. M-DCC's role as a globally focused technology training center will be greatly enhanced by putting this system in place." M-DCC plans to introduce the courses in January 2003 About Miami-Dade Community CollegeMiami-Dade Community College is nationally recognized as the largest and one of the best community colleges in the country.
