SAN JOSE, Calif., June 10 /PRNewswire/ -- Enforcement actions resulting in nearly $10.5 million in recoveries worldwide will be announced this week in conjunction with the Business Software Alliance's (BSA) International Software Piracy Sweeps Week. During Sweeps Week, BSA will announce 44 new software piracy settlements in the U.S., totaling nearly $3.1 million, and will then "sweep" around the globe announcing a year-to-date tally of enforcement actions in Asia/Pacific, Latin America, Europe and Middle East/Africa.

In the U.S., BSA will announce 16 settlements west of the Mississippi today and 28 settlements east of the Mississippi tomorrow. This year's settlements will exceed last year's announcement of 36 settlements totaling $2.5 million. Targeted states in this year's sweep include Arizona, California, Florida, Georgia, Iowa, Kentucky, Louisiana, Michigan, Minnesota, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, Texas and Washington.

BSA's International Sweeps Week coincides with the unveiling of its annual Global Software Piracy Study*, which reveals that software piracy continues to be a tremendous problem in the U.S. and worldwide. According to the study, four out of every 10 business software programs is pirated and the total revenue losses due to software piracy decreased from $11.75 billion to $10.97 billion. The U.S. software piracy rate was 25 percent in 2001, up one percentage point from the previous year. BSA estimates that a majority of losses come from businesses and organizations copying software on office computers.

"The BSA International Software Piracy Sweeps Week reminds businesses worldwide to heed our warning that software piracy has serious legal and financial consequences," said Bob Kruger, BSA's vice president of enforcement. "Organizations need to check their licenses and become compliant to avoid getting swept up in next year's Sweeps Week."
