Toronto, Canada, June 6, 2002 - Alias|WavefrontTM, an SGI (NYSE: SGI) company, announced today that it will ship in June a data interface for its StudioTools CAID (computer-aided industrial engineering) software that will interoperate with applications built on PTC GraniteT One, including Pro/ENGINEER. The Granite interface will be available free of charge as part of StudioTools Release 10.

Better Cross-Program Communication "Industrial designers who use StudioTools create a broad range of consumer, industrial and automotive products. They need tight integration with downstream engineering software and we have already given them direct connections for Unigraphics, I-DEAS and CATIA, as well as standard STEP and IGES translation," explains Peter Mehlstaeubler, Alias|Wavefront Vice President of Product Development. "Now they will soon have a solution for one of the most widely used CAD applications in the world, Pro/ENGINEER. Plus, for the first time in our history, this Direct Connect functionality will be offered without charge."

Brian Shepherd, senior vice president of technical marketing, PTC, comments, "One of the key advantages of solutions built on Granite is the ability to interoperate associatively, using the geometry, feature and data exchange capabilities at the core of Pro/ENGINEER. With the development of Alias|Wavefront's Granite interface, StudioTools users will be able to capitalize on this ability for all PTC Granite applications including Pro/ENGINEER and Pro/DESKTOP."

More Convenient Import and Export As a result of the tight integration between StudioTools and Granite, the translation process is easier and more reliable. For instance, Pro/ENGINEER part files may be imported to StudioTools without translating them first to a neutral file format such as IGES or STEP. Through the Granite gPlug interface, Pro/ENGINEER and other applications built on Granite will be able to read native Alias data. This interface does not require waiting for an engineer's report or to do the verification manually by exporting and checking each time.
