PLANO, Texas & PHILADELPHIA, PA - EDS reported today the University of Pennsylvania has received a donation of product lifecycle management (PLM) products from its PLM Solutions sector. The donation consists of 100 seats each of Unigraphics, I-deas, and Solid Edge mechanical design automation software that will be deployed into the university's undergraduate and graduate curriculum in the Mechanical Engineering and Applied Mechanics (MEAM) department. "The PLM Solutions' software will be used throughout the MEAM curriculum beginning in a popular freshman-level computer-aided design and manufacturing course that is taken by students from many disciplines and culminating with their capstone senior design projects," says Eduardo Glandt, Dean, School of Engineering & Applied Science, University of Pennsylvania. "Our undergraduate and graduate students will be introduced to Unigraphics to support our design and analysis programs, and this experience will prepare them well as they enter the commercial world."

"Penn's PLM-enhanced curriculum will address the business imperatives that arise from today's digital economy to challenge the way companies manage their product lifecycles and establish their competitive effectiveness," says Frank Kiwak, account executive, EDS PLM Solutions, Eastern Region.

In addition to being America's first university, Penn is a national leader in higher education, consistently ranking among the top ten national universities in the annual U.S. News & World Report surveys. The School of Engineering and Applied Science has a distinguished reputation for the quality of its programs. Its alumni have achieved international distinction in research, higher education, management, entrepreneurship, industrial development and government services. This success is in sync with its founder's (Benjamin Franklin) view that, "Students should learn everything that is useful and everything that is ornamental."

"Our partnership with Penn's MEAM Department adds a whole new dimension to engineering and technology education," said Hulas King, director of Global Strategic Partnerships, EDS PLM Solutions. "We believe that EDS must help academic institutions increase the skills of the workforce, introduce the most advanced technologies and improve product lifecycle management. We are proud to team with Penn's strong academic leaders and gifted students in improving manufacturing in the greater Philadelphia area and beyond."

The University of Pennsylvania joins a global list of academic partners that are educating next generation engineers using the same software also utilized by over 24,000 leading manufacturers.

About the University of Pennsylvania

The University of Pennsylvania was founded in 1740, based on a radical idea that students should be educated in not only the classics, but also what were then contemporary subjects. More than 20,000 students are enrolled in Penn's 12 graduate and professional schools, many of which are national leaders in their chosen fields. Penn is a national leader in interdisciplinary programs, which cross-traditional academic and professional boundaries. The modern computer age started at Penn with the creation of ENIAC, the world's first electronic, large scale, general-purpose digital computer. Similarly, alumni of the School of Engineering and Applied Science have invented many technologies that are still in use today. The School continues the tradition of combining engineering technology and the liberal arts to prepare students for their professions. The School integrates current theory and hands on experience with modern instrumentation and analytical techniques to prepare students for a technological society.
