CADscript Mapping Award to Land and Property Information New South Wales
Perth, Western Australia, March 2002 - Land and Property Information New South Wales (LPI) took the runner-up prize in Corporate Montage's inaugural "Battle of the Maps" map production competition. Open to all CADscript users, entries were received from companies and organizations in Australia, the United States of America, Germany, the Middle East and New Zealand. Entries were judged on a series of features ranging from aesthetic appeal (clarity of layout, use of colour, data integration etc.) to the use of CADscript functions - techniques, number of features used and innovative use of CADscript. "The exciting thing about the 2002 competition was the number of outstanding entries we received. The CADscript user base, which is now over 1,600 in number, is a proud and talented group and this reflected in the quality of cartographic output we received. Whilst Corporate Montage can continue developing leading edge map production software (for MicroStation) and plot management solutions like MAPscript, ultimately we rely on the users to craft the final product. As you will see when you visit our web site, the LPI entry is certainly testimony to the skill of its authors and CADscript's ability to publish such a refined product from within MicroStation," said Mark Bright, Sales Director for Corporate Montage. As part of the New South Wales Department of Information Technology and Management, LPI provides a large range of services, including topographic and cadastral mapping, surveying, spatial information and cartography. As the official source of spatial information for New South Wales, Australia, LPI is also responsible for providing full topographic and cadastral mapping for the state. The Royal National Park Tourist Map was one of three maps submitted by LPI to the "Battle of the Maps" competition and based on the judging criteria, the map impressed the judges and was awarded runner-up position. Interestingly, this fifth edition Royal National Park Tourist Map is the first edition to be electronically compiled and cartographically enhanced. LPI owns 16 licensed copies of CADscript and cartographers, Dale Evans and Joan Campbell, took advantage of the technology and functions available in CADscript to reach the style and design of the Royal National Park Tourist Map. This included using a Transparent Fill on the inset area of the map and using the Graduated Fill function to create a circle with 200 graduations from burnt orange to pale orange to define the NSW metropolitan area. "Data drawn from LPI's Digital Topographic Database holds vector information in a different symbology set to the one required for the Royal National Park Tourist Map due to scale and map use. CADscript's re-symbolization functionality made the normally laborious task of re-specifying features on the map simple. Without changing the original data, CADscript can display and plot the new symbology, making our job very easy," said Dale Evans. Using the CADscript Fill and Outline Text command, text on the map, such as suburb names, has a white outline to increase its clarity. Some text has also been curved using FlexiText to match the path of curved lines. Mr. Evans believes that with CADscript, the output of MicroStation files to Postscript for a quality product is done with ease. CADscript's WYSIWYG capabilities meant that we could check plots of the final product on screen before printing. CADscript's print engine also simplifies the task of scaling maps and fitting them to different size paper," he said. "Planning for next years, Battle of the Maps has already started with the first innovation being the introduction of four or five different categories to cater for the different industries/disciplines CADscript is utilized in. Given CADscript has over 1,600 users in 16 countries, Corporate Montage is looking forward to even more countries being represented in 2003," said Mark Bright. CADscript allows users to work WYSIWYG in MicroStation and produce high quality presentations, and mapping output from within MicroStation. The software gives users the power of colour and removes limitations on ordering restrictions within MicroStation DGN files. Special capabilities of CADscript include FlexiText capabilities, graduated fills, and transparency, placing of EPS files, colour separation and more. Users no longer have to guess what the DGN file will look like printed, they will know it. MAPscript Server is a print management system that enables high-speed and high-quality plotting of documents across any TCP/IP network. MAPscript includes a high-speed PostScript RIP for driving HP, OC and other large and small format printers. With MAPscript Server, CAD drawings and output from any Windows program can be ripped into industry standard file formats (PDF, TIFF, BMP, JPG etc.) for publishing, reviewing and archival storage. Easy to use accounting functionality provides a comprehensive solution for monitoring and allocating plot costs to job numbers or departments. Corporate Montage is a leading international company specializing in Computer Aided Design, GIS and Engineering Information Systems and provides intelligent software solutions to MicroStation users worldwide.
